What is Chocobo GP?

The thrilling new racing game puts you in the driving seat with beloved characters from the Chocobo and FINAL FANTASY series. Feather the throttle with Chocobo himself, get kweh-zy with Camilla and her Pa, or summon some serious racing skills with figures like Ifrit and Shiva!

Chocobo winning a race in Chocobo GP

Whoever your racer of choice may be, you’ll speed through magical, chaotic courses, including the pastoral pastels of Chocobo Farm, the rain-soaked streets of Zozo, and the glitzy glamor of the Gold Saucer. As you race, you’ll want to touch the Magic Eggs scattered across the courses as they let you use spells to give you an on-track advantage.

Chocobo winning a race in Chocobo GP

Cast Fire to damage those ahead of you, Water to wipe out those behind, Haste to give yourself a speed boost and many more! Spells can be powered up by collecting more magicite from Magic Eggs, so you have to decide whether to fire it off now, or wait for a more opportune time…

You’ll also want to be strategic about which color of Magic Eggs you seek out! Copper Magic Eggs will grant you a random magicite or crystal (this charges up your racer’s special ability!), whereas silver Magic Eggs will grant you the same type of magicite that you currently own. Gold Magic Eggs, meanwhile, will grant you two of the same type of magicite or crystal, so you can quickly get access to more powerful magic to use on your competitors.

How do Seasons and Prize Passes work?

In Chocobo GP mode, Season events are held every two months or so. While the Season is running, you’ll earn a Season score and improve your Season level when you take part. You can then use these to obtain special rewards, such as items or Gil to spend on things like costumes, vehicle stickers and characters like Squall Leonhart in the in-game shop.

Chocobo GP preview: characters, seasons and more revealed!

See exciting new information about the upcoming Nintendo Switch racing game, including some familiar faces and locations coming in the game!
By Duncan Heaney

Want to know something kweh-zy? We’re only a few weeks away from the launch of Chocobo GP!

The new Nintendo Switch racing game puts the feathered hero and his friends into a high speed competition on vibrant courses, all based on iconic locations from across the Chocobo and FINAL FANTASY series.

With the launch date fast approaching with the speed of… well, a Chocobo GP, we thought it would be a perfect time to give you a closer look at the game. It’s almost time to put your pedal to the metal

Characters

Chocobo GP is full of amazing characters from both the Chocobo series and the wider FINAL FANTASY universe. Each is playable, and each is competing to be the best on the track. Here’s a look at some potentially familiar faces:

Terra

Terra is a strange girl in many ways. What’s more, she seems to be lost in a trance.

Her unique ability is called Magitek Missile and true to its name, Terra launches five magitek missiles that follow the track in front of her. Any characters who get hit by a missile - or even caught in the explosion when they detonate - will wipe out!

Maduin

Terra’s father may look scary, but he’s actually a kind and loving dad… and overcome with worry for his daughter.

When he uses his unique ability, Chaos Wave, Maduin concentrates his aura to enter a boosted state. He’ll travel forward for a period of time and cause any characters he hits directly to wipe out.

Vivi

This black mage boy is often afraid - he doesn’t like heights in particular.

He has the ability to use Dbl Magic. When he activates it, Vivi enters Trance and can use two different types of high-tier magic at once. The direction you input with the left stick when you activate the ability defines which type of magicite he uses - the effects are the same as using regular magicite.

Steiner

The leader of the Knights of Alexandria is a stern and uncompromising man. That said, he’s surprisingly easily brought to tears.

His unique ability - Moonlight Slash - is borne of hard work and dedication. When a racer is in front of him, he’ll attack them with his sword and cause them to wipe out. If there’s more than one racer nearby, he’ll keep attacking.

Asura

Asura is a glamorous socialite and married to Leviathan. She has three different faces that she swaps between depending on her mood.

Her special ability is called Tsunami and - appropriately enough - lets her surf along on a giant tsunami. She continues along the course in a boosted state for a period of time, moving left and right automatically. Any characters that come into contact with the waves will wipe out.

Titan

Although Titan looks fierce, he’s actually an affable fellow who loves to chat to people. He’s best mates with Ben (who we introduced in our last blog) and worries about his self-destructive lifestyle.

With his Gaia’s Wrath ability, Titan slams his mighty fists on the ground, which sends a shockwave out from the impact. It also shoots a pillar of rock out in front of the racers ahead of him.

Sylph

Sylph is a young girl who lives on the beach near the Monster Village and looks like a fairy. In contrast to her child-like appearance, she has quite the mouth on her!

By using her Whispering Wind ability, Sylph traps other racers in a whirlwind to slow them down. It also makes it harder for them to control their vehicles.

Ramuh

This relative of Maduin lives in Zozo and is a reckless old chatterbox.

His unique ability is Judgement Bolt. Ramuh uses his staff to summon a thundercloud, which homes in on nearby racers. Once it’s over their head, a bolt of lightning makes them wipe out.

Shiva

This icy figure is Shiva. She’s Ramuh’s granddaughter and is always taking selfies to post whenever and wherever.

Her Diamond Dust ability blasts her competitors with freezing ice. Frozen characters are unable to perform certain actions for a set time, including using magicite, abilities or even drifting!

Mecha-Chocobo

Mecha-Chocobo is so-called because… well, it’s a mechanical chocobo. The hero having a sinister robotic imposter has long been a staple of adventure tales.

When Mecha-Chocobo uses its Beserk ability, its weapon mount will open and unleash a full-blown frontal assault for a set amount of time.

Customization

Chocobo GP lets you alter the look of characters and vehicles so you can choose a style that suits you.

You can change characters’ costumes and vehicle colors.

You can also affix stickers to vehicles to give them that personal touch.

Magicite

As you race around a course, you’ll see Magic Eggs. If you touch one, you’ll get a piece of magicite, which lets you cast magic to help you or harass your rivals.

Magicite comes in three levels - if you collect multiple of the same type, your spells will be even more potent.

Back in December, we revealed some of the types of magicite you’ll find on-track. Today, we have a few more to reveal, starting with…

Quake

This magicite contains the power of earth. When used, it creates a shockwave that centers on your vehicle and shakes the ground around it. Any characters caught in the area will be damaged.

Bahamut

A very powerful magicite that lets you call forth the strongest summon of all - Bahamut! The invincible figure boosts your speed and moves you automatically along the course for a set amount of time.

Ultima

Here it is - the ultimate magic. Your magicite can transform into Ultima if you continue to collect Magic Eggs while your Magicite Stocker is full.

Courses

Chocobo GP features course set in locations from across the Chocobo and FINAL FANTASY series. Here’s a glimpse at just a few of the areas you’ll race in - you may well recognise a few!

Chocobo Farm

Cid’s Test Track

Monster Village

Zozo

Alexandria

Big Bridge

Chocobo GP Mode: Seasons

In Chocobo GP mode, up to 64 players can compete online to become the ultimate racer. In this mode, ‘Season’ events are held every two months or so.

While a Season is running, anyone who takes part will earn Season score and improve their Season level. They can then obtain special rewards, determined by their level, such as items or gil (which can be spent in the game’s different shops).

Prize Pass

You can spend mithril to acquire a Prize Pass, which makes you eligible to obtain special rewards at each Season level. These rewards include new characters, which change with each Season.

In addition, the Prize Pass also increases the amount of gil you earn playing Chocobo GP mode, giving you more money to spend at the in-game store.

Here’s a look at some characters arriving in Season 1:

Cloud Strife joins the race as a Prize Pass-exclusive reward. As a Season One login bonus, all players* can obtain 800 mythril (equivalent to a Prize Pass) for a limited time**, allowing them to obtain Cloud as a level reward of the first Prize Pass.

Squall Leonhart will appear in the line-up at the Gil shop, so all players with the full game can get him while he’s available!

…whatever.

*Both players of the full version of Chocobo GP and Chocobo GP Lite can receive this login bonus, however some restrictions apply to the Mythril Shop within the Lite version. Any mythril obtained in the Lite edition will carry over to the full version of the game for players who upgrade.

**Free mythril login bonus campaign end date to be announced at a later date.

We hope you enjoyed this new look at Chocobo GP. There’s not long to wait until you can try it yourselves - the game launches March 10, 2022, for Nintendo Switch!

In addition to the full game, you can also get Chocobo GP Lite - a deluxe demo of the game that lets you try out the Chocobo GP mode, local multiplayer, AND play through the prologue of the story mode!

If you like what you play, all your progress also carries over to the full game!

Please note:

  • The number of characters available in the Lite version differs from the full version of the game.

  • Online races are only available on Chocobo GP mode.

  • For local multiplayer with multiple Switch consoles, one player must own the full game.

  • Only owners of the full version can create lobbies when using a local multiplayer connection. Lite version players must join pre-existing lobbies to play

Team NINJA from KOEI TECMO GAMES present a savage new take on the FINAL FANTASY series.

You take control of Jack Garland on a quest to defeat the darkness that threatens the land of Cornelia. You’ll explore sprawling locations full of monsters, traps, and secrets - and switch between a dizzying number of jobs in order to overcome them, from Swordsman to Mage.

Of course, it’s not just a compellingly challenging action RPG - it’s a love letter to the FINAL FANTASY series as a whole. You’ll visit locations featured in the original FINAL FANTASY I, including the Chaos Shrine and Pravoka as well as some others that might cause a few twinges of nostalgia for fans of the series. Long story short, Frey’s got a big job ahead of her to save this world. Fortunately, she’s equipped with powerful magic that lets her take on dangerous enemies and flow through the world with incredibly smooth and satisfying parkour.

Forspoken releases for PS5 and PC on May 24, 2022. We’ll have much more to share about this next-gen exclusive game in the future, but for now, make sure you follow the team on social media so you get all the big news first:

FINAL FANTASY VI pixel remaster

Outriders Worldslayer Expansion

  • Release: 2022 (TBD)

Outriders won a lot of fans last year thanks to its crunchy combat, super-flexible skills system, and compelling loot. Late last year, the game got even better with the massive New Horizon update, which improved the endgame, loot drops and customization system.

But we know that fans want new content, and that’s exactly what’s coming in 2022. The Worldslayer expansion will take you to the furthest reaches of Enoch, where new stories, new challenges and new threats await.

We’ll have more to share on the upcoming expansion this year, so make sure you follow the team on social media to hear the big news first:

STAR OCEAN THE DIVINE FORCE

  • Release: 2022 (TBD)

STAR OCEAN THE DIVINE FORCE is a brand-new RPG that fuses science fiction and fantasy. With two protagonists, several allies, beautiful character designs by renowned artist Akiman, and an unprecedented level of freedom for the series, it’s shaping up to be something very special.

You play as either Raymond or Laeticia. Raymond hails from an advanced civilization, and the captain of the space trading ship Ydas, whereas Laeticia is a princess-knight from a kingdom on an underdeveloped planet.

Regardless of which you choose, you’ll have a genuinely impressive amount of flexibility over how you traverse the world - not only can characters run freely on the ground, they can also fly! Explore the mountains, valleys and towns of the world freely!

The combat system’s equally nimble, with fast-speed attacks, and enemies that force you to dodge and think about your position.

Unfortunately, we can’t give you a release date yet, but the game will release for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Steam in 2022.

As you can see, it’s going to be a bumper year for games. We hope you’re as excited to play these as we are!

Of course, we may well have some surprises to share over the course of the next 12 months, so make sure you visit the blog regularly and follow Square Enix on social media to see all the announcements.

Here’s the big news: Chocobo GP releases for Nintendo Switch on March 10, 2022!

The new racing game pits the faithful feathered fellow and his pals against one another on vibrant tracks, based on iconic locations from across the Chocobo and FINAL FANTASY series.

You probably want to know more about the game, so we thought we’d give you a closer inspection at just some of the things you have to look forward to.

Characters

Chocobo GP features a large roster of characters from the Chocobo games, as well as a few familiar faces from across the FINAL FANTASY series. Each has their own unique ability that - if used effectively - can give them an edge against the competition.

Let’s meet just some of the cast:

Chocobo

Chocobo GP screenshot

Of course Chocobo is in the game! This treasure hunter travels the world with Atla the Moogle. A pure and sweet soul, he works his socks off for Atla, who takes advantage by making him enter races.

His unique ability is Chocobo Dash! When activated, Chocobo summons a ring behind him and automatically boosts forward for a set period of time. Characters who also pass through the ring get a boost too!

Atla

Chocobo GP screenshot

Another treasure hunter, Atla travels with his companion Chocobo. Quite the contrarian, Atla considers himself the boss and Chocobo his subordinate. He’s voiced by Laura Post.

His unique ability is Pom-Pom Crystal, which lets the sneaky moogle steal crystals (more on them below) from the character ahead of him. Not only that, he also scatters a number of fake crystals behind him. If an unfortunate racer touches one of these fakes, they all explode!

Camilla

Chocobo GP screenshot

Camilla is a kind young chocobo who’s got a bit of a green thumb (well, wing we suppose) - she loves growing plants. She’s voiced in the game by Lizzie Freeman.

Her love of gardening is evident in her unique ability Chocobo Combo. Camilla creates 5 flower rings around the course, that grant her a boost and invincibility when she passes through them. The effects are extended each time she passes through a ring, so it’s worth going for as many as possible! Other racers can also get a boost by passing through one of the rings too.

Camilla's Pa

Chocobo GP screenshot

Camilla’s father is a serious chocobo of good character. He always does his very best - even if sometimes he finds his efforts go nowhere. He’s voiced by Sean Chiplock.

Pa deploys his plow from the sides of his vehicle and boosts forward automatically in an invincible state. Any characters that come into contact with him will wipe out, so watch out if you’re racing against him! Another thing to be careful of - as the ride moves, Pa will create water puddles. Anyone who comes into contact with these will be sent into a spin.

Clair

Chocobo GP screenshot

Clair may seem like he’s quiet and easy-going, but apparently he has an important mission. He’s voiced by Stephen Fu.

Watch out for Clair’s unique ability Invisihood, which makes him transparent and invisible to nearby racers. While he’s in this state, he can’t be targeted by many abilities or magicite attacks.

Racing Hero X

Chocobo GP screenshot

This mysterious Moogle regularly appears before Chocobo and his buddies. He has a habit of poking his nose into the other racers’ business and generally takes care of the participants of the race. He’s voiced by Cristina Vee Valenzuela.

Speaking of which, you’ll definitely want to avoid getting in the way of his unique ability Mog Beam X. The speedster fires a gigantic energy beam that travels along the racetrack, taking out any characters in its path. The beam has defensive capabilities too - it can be deployed behind as a shield, blocking any magicite attacks and wiping out any characters who touch it.

Cid

Chocobo GP screenshot

A self-proclaimed “genius scientist”, Cid works as a mechanic at the test track where many race-enthusiasts gather. He’s voiced by Keith Silverstein.

Cid’s Three-Shot Burst ability bombards other racers with his tank's cannon. You can even change the target he’ll attack by holding a direction when you activate the ability.

Shirma

Chocobo GP screenshot

The sweet and earnest Shirma works as an assistant at Cid’s test track. She has a strong sense of justice - she won’t just stand by and watch if she sees an argument or someone being bullied. She’s played by Erica Mendez.

Her ability Kurukuru Counter is great for fighting back against aggressive racers. Shirma releases the power of Kurukuru, who envelops the area around her in a barrier for a set time. If any rival racers use magicite on her during that time, Kurukuru appears and hits them with a counterattack.

Irma

Chocobo GP screenshot

Irma comes from a family of legendary treasure hunters and is a regular at Cid’s test track, although she seems to be troubled by something. She’s voiced by Christie Cate.

Irma pushes herself and her vehicle to the limit with her unique ability Boost Chain. When activated, a button press gives her a temporary boost. She can still drift, use magicite, and do aerial tricks while using this ability.

Ifrit

Chocobo GP screenshot

This flaming figure works part-time as a firefighter near Cid’s test track. He’s voiced by Samuel Riegel.

His ability Hellfire really heats things up on the track - literally. When activated, Ifrit releases a burst of flame from his vehicle’s hose to create a fiery barrier across the course. The inferno will move along the track and cause any racers it touches to wipe out.

Gilgamesh

Chocobo GP screenshot

The multi-limbed Gilgamesh tries to get in the way of Chocobo and friends by challenging them to races. Despite his appearance, he can be timid, sometimes getting startled when his opponents come on strong.

Gilgamesh can summon a unique ability called Sword Saint. When used, he’ll throw several pieces from his prized sword collection to the front or the rear. Racers who hit one of the swords stuck in the ground will suffer damage depending on the sword type, from a simple spin to a full wipe out.

Ben

Chocobo GP screenshot

Ben the Behemoth doesn't really know what to do with himself, so he marauds aimlessly on a self-destructive rampage.

When he uses his ability Charge, Ben will grow in size and emit an aura. This gives him a boost - any characters he smashes into will wipe out!

Vehicle types

You’ve met some of the grid, but you may still be wondering what they’re racing in. There are three vehicle types in Chocobo GP:

Chocobo GP screenshot

Standard…

Chocobo GP screenshot

Speed…

Chocobo GP screenshot

…and grip.

Each model type has different characteristics, such as high speed, faster acceleration and improved handling - so pick the one that best fits your race strategy!

Magicite

Chocobo GP screenshot

Scattered around the various racetracks are Magic Eggs. Touching one of these will grant you a piece of magicite. These can be used to invoke various magical effects that can help you or hinder rivals.

Each type of magicite comes in three levels - if you collect multiple pieces of the same type, you’ll be able to unleash even more potent spells!

Chocobo GP screenshot
Chocobo GP screenshot

Here are just some of the magicite you’ll be able to use in the heat of the race:

Fire

Chocobo GP screenshot

This magicite shoots a ball of flame forwards to inflict damage on other racers.

Water

Chocobo GP screenshot

This leaves a water hazard behind your ride that other racers must avoid. Menace them with moistness!

Aero

Chocobo GP screenshot

The power of wind lets you create a tornado that snakes around the track.

Thunder

Chocobo GP screenshot

With Thunder magicite, you can shoot a ball of lightning that shocks its target and any racers nearby.

Blizzard

Chocobo GP screenshot

Blizzard fires an icicle that travels along the course and freezes any racer it hits. The higher the level, the longer a target is frozen for.

Doom

Chocobo GP screenshot

Doom summons a Reaper to haunt and harass the racer one position ahead of you. If you’re in first place yourself, the Reaper will haunt second place instead.

MBarrier

Chocobo GP screenshot

Your character is enveloped by the power of the magicite, automatically blocking a single magicite attack.

Haste

Chocobo GP screenshot

As the name suggests, this boosts your vehicle’s speed above normal levels for a certain amount of time.

Swap

Chocobo GP screenshot

This one’s fun and useful in equal measure. Swap creates two warp gates that change a character’s position. Passing through the first will cause you to emerge from the second.

Get up to speed on Chocobo GP - coming to Switch in 2022!

We’ve just announced a kweh-zy new racing game, based on the beloved Chocobo series. Filled with iconic FINAL FANTASY locations, it’s going to be one heck of a ride.

This exhilarating kart racing game lets you take to the road in iconic locations from across the Chocobo and FINAL FANTASY series.

So what exactly gets Chocobo and pals to participate in this automotive extravaganza? The answer’s revealed by the game’s story mode, which sees the gang enter a racing tournament to win a truly unbelievable reward: a wish for whatever their heart desires.

As incentives go, that’s pretty good - and the racers are out to win! Magic Eggs containing magicite are scattered across the courses - collect one of these and you’ll be imbued with magic, such as Fire or Aero, which you can use against your competitors to disrupt their race. Of course, they can do the same to you…

Fortunately, each character from the roster has access to a special ability, which can be activated under certain conditions during the race - that’ll add some drama when your rivals least expect it!

As for the courses themselves, you’ll zip through bright and vibrant scenery that takes inspiration from throughout the Chocobo and FINAL FANTASY series. We don’t want to reveal everything here, but you’ll race through Cid’s Test Track, the streets of Alexandria, Zozo and the Gold Saucer.

There are lots of different game modes included too, with select modes supporting online and local play. For example, in addition to the story mode, you’ll also be able to set up custom races, do your best to make it through survival races in a bracket-style tournament and more.

Chocobo GP is on track (heh) to launch for Nintendo Switch in 2022. We’ll have more to share in the future, so to stay up to date with news about the game, make sure you follow FINAL FANTASY on social media:
