In Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars, every element of the adventure is represented by cards: characters, monsters, items, equipment… even the world itself!
It’s a very charming aesthetic, but don’t be fooled into thinking that means an easy adventure - you’re on a quest to kill a dragon, after all. To give you an ace up your sleeve, we’ve put together some useful (and spoiler-free) tips and tricks:
Explore the map thoroughly
It can be tempting to beeline to the next big story moment in Voice of Cards - even if it’s just to hear the game master narration by Todd Haberkorn. We swear, that’s man’s voice is like liquid honey.
However, we recommend you take a look around the entire map because there’s lots to discover. You might stumble over a random chest full of gold or items, uncover a clue that could lead you to riches, find a new NPC to interact with… the list goes on.
It’s also worth going off the beaten track to find enemies to battle for additional EXP and gold. Or just for fun, of course.
Keep your cards varied
The monsters your intrepid party run into are a diverse bunch, with different strengths and weaknesses. That means they require different approaches to take down.
For that reason, it’s a good idea to make sure you have a variety of spell and ability cards in your deck. For example, if you run into a big, buff burly beastie who can shrug off your physical attacks, it would be most inconvenient to be lacking in magical options.
So, make sure you have some cards to deal with any eventuality, especially when starting out.
Experiment with your team
Every character in your party has access to a specific ability that only they can learn, some of which can be extremely useful in a pinch.
Make sure you try out different sets of skills and party compositions as you play the game. There’s a lot of strategic potential in the characters’ unique skills, so experimenting with your setups will be well rewarded.
Have healers to hand
Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars starts relatively gently, but as the adventure develops, so too do the dangers you’ll face. As a result, towards the mid-to-late-game, you may find it useful to have two ‘healers’ in the party.
One of these healers should have access to a spell or ability that can heal a single target for a lot of HP. The other should have access to AOE healing, so they can uplift the party as a whole.
Having these different healing options available is often enough to pull you out of trouble in the tougher fights.
Talk to everyone
When in a town, make sure you have a chat with as many NPCs as you can. Not only will they typically something to say, a few may even offer you a special card.
It is more than worth collecting all these cards because they may well prove useful for… something. What, you may be wondering? We’ll leave that for you to discover for yourselves.
Find the character stories
When an NPC card is flipped over, you’ll discover more about them in a few lines of text.
They’re similar in a sense to the Weapon Stories in the NieR series in how they add lore and intrigue to the world. What’s more, despite the brevity of the text some of these ‘Flip Stories’ are surprisingly powerful - they’ll definitely stick with you long after you turn off the game.
Play through again once you’ve finished.
There’s a New Game+ mode in Voice of Cards, and it’s well worth jumping back into the campaign.
Not only will you be able make different decisions in the story, but you’ll also have access to a hidden dungeon with a powerful new enemy.
A tip for the Game Parlor
The Game Parlor gives you access to a separate card game, which can be played against NPC AI in-game, or locally with friends on the same system.
The basic rules are simple - try to create pairs, sets three of a kind or three cards in a row to earn points. Whoever has the most points when the cards run out is the winner.
The game layers on the complexity with three additional rulesets that add new elements like skill cards, Jokers and events to those rules. Whichever rules you go with for the game, here’s our pro tip: try to keep the highest value card as your hold card. This will increase your chance of making a high-scoring pair or run.
Most importantly… take your time
If you only take one piece of advice from this article, make it this one.
Kimihiko Fujisaka’s stunning character designs and Keiichi Okabe’s wonderful soundtrack all combine to give Voice of Cards a relaxing, chilled out vibe. It’s a game that just feels… pleasant to be around.
There’s nothing pressing you to race to the next event or pushing you to rush forwards through the plot. Quite the contrary - this is a game that actively wants you to enjoy it at your own pace.
So, take your time, dig into the details, and savor this one-of-a-kind RPG.
