Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy Curtain Call is out now!

By Square Enix Team

It’s time to waltz for the moon as Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy Curtain Call is out today in the UK/EU!

The newest addition to the Theatrhythm series is now available for the Nintendo 3DS and 2DS systems and features three times more songs and twice as many playable characters as its predecessor Theatrhythm Final Fantasy which came out over two years ago. Like the airship Blackjack, time sure flies! You can pick up Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call for £29.99/€39.99 in shops and if you’ve previously played the demo, you’ll automatically have more characters unlocked when you start the full game to make sure you’re not alone.

For those of you who may be new to the series, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call is a rhythm action game that combines classic Final Fantasy music with RPG elements. Curtain Call also features two brand new modes and a new CollectaCard system but don’t be blinded by the light, I’m here to recap and guide you through them.

Quest Medley Mode

In the Quest Medley Mode you’ll progress through a number of “Chaos Maps,” each one varying in difficulty and at each location/stop on the map you’ll have to play a song. However, you’ve got to be careful because your heroes’ health does not replenish along your journey so you’ve got to balance your party wisely, maybe equipping healing abilities and making sure you’ve got the right items to not only make it to the end of the quest but also to defeat the quest’s boss! After emerging from the decisive battle victorious by defeating the boss, you’ll receive the map’s reward, experience points for your party and if you’re lucky you may even get a rare drop reward from the boss too.

Versus Mode

Maybe you’re a lion and want to go head to head with your friends? Well now you can! You can compete against each other locally, perhaps clash on a big bridge or you can challenge those who fight around the world via the Nintendo Network. Throughout the battle you can fill your EX Burst Gauge to unleash a random EX Burst on your opponent. The EX Bursts are deadly status ailments that will negatively affect your opponent’s ability to play. There are nine different effects and each one would make J-E-N-O-V-A proud! When the song ends, the winner will receive two CollectaCards and advance in the ranking (in ranked battles), while the loser gets one consolation CollectaCard.

CollectaCard Crystarium

Using the Collectacards you earn at the end of songs and through the Versus Mode, you can power up the stats of your characters to make them stronger! You can choose up to eight CollectaCards to attempt to boost your characters parameters and the rarer the card, the bigger the boost. You’ll be able to show off your swords of fury in no time!

Speaking of the versus mode, we’ve been running a little tournament here in the Square Enix Europe office. You might have seen the videos of the semi-finals on our YouTube channel last week but now, after engaging in absolute rhythm action mayhem it’s time for the all-girl final! Watch the match between Cat and Rossi below:

You can also watch the decisive battle for 3rd and 4th place right here.

Also to celebrate the launch of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call we’ve got some brand new DLC for you to add to your experience. There are eight new songs and one new character available from today!

Final Fantasy V – Library of Ancients

There’ll be plenty more DLC songs and characters coming soon so don’t worry, new content won’t be a fleeting dream. Keep an eye on the blog and on westerly winds I’ll be sure to keep you all updated on what’s behind the door in the coming weeks.

If you want a little bit of extra fun be sure to take our Theatrhythm music quiz!

I nearly got a perfect score but got one answer wrong so will have to make do with 75 points.

Anyway, we hope that a copy of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call will find their way into your 3DS/2DS and have a place to call home and a special high five goes out to anyone who can spot all the Final Fantasy song references I’ve snuck into this post too!
