Tactics Ogre: Reborn

12 of the best turn-based RPGs you should play from Square Enix

Looking to flex your strategic muscles? There are plenty of turn-based RPGs from Square Enix, from new releases to returning classics. Take a look!
By Duncan Heaney

When you’re battling the forces of evil, it can be helpful to have time to think.

That’s why turn-based combat is so fun in RPGs. Having the space to consider your options and execute the perfect strategy is a thrill that never gets old… and something that many fans just can’t enough of!

There are plenty of turn-based options from Square Enix too, from traditional takes on the formula, to brand new ideas that make things fresh and exciting. Whether it’s all-new games, or returning classics, we thought it would be fun to showcase some of the most recent turn-based / command-based games we’ve released.

How many of these have you played?

OCTOPATH TRAVELER II

This acclaimed sprawling RPG features 8 new characters, each with their own unique stories and abilities. These consistently surprising tales run the gamut from dark, tragic crime dramas to upbeat tales about teaching the world to smile.

Each provides plenty of opportunity to experiment with the ‘Break and Boost’ battle system - a deeply strategic take on turn-based combat. It’s based on exploiting enemy weaknesses to remove their shield points, rendering them vulnerable to attack. To help with this, you earn boost points each turn, which you can spend to attack multiple times or strengthen a big hit.

Knowing when to save your points and when to spend them is key to success, leading to battles that are always engaging, whether you’re mashing monsters or butting heads with a boss.

Exploring the world is also full of possibility thanks to Path Actions, which let you interact with NPCs in different ways. Some characters can recruit townsfolk for battle, bribe them for information, or even mug them! Each character has two Path Actions - one for day and another for night, making for lots of different ways to find secrets and resolve quests.

And everything is brought to life in the game’s beautiful HD-2D art style, which fuses 2D sprites with 3D graphics for a look that’s both nostalgic and modern. If you want an RPG that pays homage to the past of the genre, while bringing it up to date with exciting fresh ideas, OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is not to be missed!

DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition

DRAGON QUEST XI S takes the traditional-style RPG to its ultimate form.

Everything about the game oozes premium quality, from the beautiful visuals to the fast-paced turn-based combat system. It’s a game where there’s always a new place to see or a new secret to discover, which makes it very hard to stop playing!

The Definitive Edition adds to what was already a great game, adding new story chapters based around party members, tons of quality of life features that make the game a joy to play, and even the ability to play the entire game in 2D, with classic DRAGON QUEST mechanics!

Look, the game’s a genuine masterpiece. Play it.

FINAL FANTASY I-VI Pixel Remaster Series

These games need no introductions: six of the most beloved RPGs in history have been remastered with beautiful pixel art, quality of life features such as auto-battle, and stunning rearranged and rerecorded soundtracks.

Each of these games is distinct and memorable, featuring innovative ideas that fans continue to adore to this day

The games area are available digitally on Nintendo Switch and PS4 and Steam - either individually or together as a bundle. They're also available on iOS and Android devices.

LIVE A LIVE

One of the most unique RPGs of the Super Nintendo era has been remade with stunning HD-2D visuals, newly added character voice over and a fantastic soundtrack, rearranged under the supervision of original composer Yoko Shimomura.

This is a game that dares to be different - rather than one continuous narrative, it’s an omnibus that contains multiple shorter stories. These tales follow eight individual protagonists in different eras - each with their own unique story and unique mechanics.

For example, you might be a ninja infiltrating a mysterious castle in Edo Japan, or a modern-day fighter on the world stage slugging it out to be the best. One story could see you trapped on board a spaceship in the wake of a terrible accident, while another puts you in the role of a kung fu master, searching for an heir in ancient China. One adventure even takes you to prehistoric times, before language even existed.

You can play seven chapters in any order, with a final eight chapter awaiting at the end, set in the Middle Ages.

Full of twists and turns and with a strategic turn-based battle system where timing and character placement matter, LIVE A LIVE is innovative, experimental and one of the best RPGs you can get today:

The Voice of Cards series

This series of laid-back RPGs is full of humor and heart. Each one tells its tale through the medium of cards - the world is made from cards, the characters are portrayed as cards, and even weapons and attacks in combat are cards.

The games are bursting with personality thanks to a stellar creative team, including Creative Director YOKO TARO (Creative Director on the NieR series), Character Designer Kimihiko Fujisaka (Drakengard series) and Music Director Keiichi Okabe (NieR series).

There are three games in the Voice of Cards series - each one a completely standalone tale with its own world, characters and mechanics. They are:

  • Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars - a less-than reputable adventurer sets out on a not-entirely-altruistic mission to kill the dragon that terrorizes the kingdom.

  • Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden - a young hero heads onto the high seas to find a way to save his island from imminent destruction.

  • Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden - a girl swears revenge on monsters after they destroy her home.

They’re breezy adventures, with incredible presentation and fantastic music across the board, compelling stories with unconventional characters and entertaining turn-based battles. You won’t find many RPGs as wildly entertaining as these!

While each game is available to purchase individually, they’re also now available in a collection. Go check it out:

BRAVELY DEFAULT II

BRAVELY DEFAULT II is a joyous celebration of classic RPGs - we’re talking turn-based combat, an incredibly flexible job system, dangerous dungeons to delve into, memorable heroes and - naturally - an absolutely incredible soundtrack.

But while it hearkens back to games like FINAL FANTASY V, it’s no mere nostalgia project. It modernizes things with innovative ideas of its own, including the battle system, from which the game takes its name.

In combat, you can choose to ‘Default’, and defend against damage, and save that turn to use later. Or you can use the ‘Brave’ command to spend all your turns in succession, allowing you to link multiple actions together. It’s very easy to get to grips with but has a staggering amount of tactical depth.

Long story short, if you’re a fan of Japanese RPGs, then you owe it to yourself to play BRAVELY DEFAULT II.

DUNGEON ENCOUNTERS

Head into a dark and mysterious dungeon full of obstacles, monsters and surprises in an RPG that dares to be different.

DUNGEON ENCOUNTERS strips back the genre to its essential elements, and in doing so takes those elements to incredible heights. You traverse 99 floors of a deep and dangerous labyrinth using a 2D grid-based movement system that requires you to consider your routes very carefully.

That’s because there are lots of dangerous monsters on each floor, which you’ll face off against using a refined version of the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, as pioneered in FINAL FANTASY IV. In fact, the creator of that battle system, Hiroyuki Ito, is the Director for this game!

Add a rocking soundtrack overseen by Musical Director Nobuo Uematsu, and you have an incredibly accomplished and satisfying adventure. It may not be the most flamboyant RPG on this list, but it’s definitely one of the most strategic and satisfying.

Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered

The SaGa series is one of the most respected RPG franchises out there, lauded for its free-form storytelling, innovative combat system and incredible soundtracks. Late last year, one of the best games in the series was remastered for modern platforms: Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered.

This new version of the game (itself a PS2 remake, released in Japan and the US in 2005, of the original Romancing SaGa originally released in Japan in 1992) enhances the original with new events, new characters to recruit and use in battle, and lots of quality of life improvements, such as speeding up time.

It’s the perfect entry point for anyone coming to the SaGa series for the first time and a nostalgic treat to those who aren’t.

VARIOUS DAYLIFE

Are you looking for something a little different? VARIOUS DAYLIFE gives you a fresh take on the turn-based RPG.

The setup is simple. You’re a new resident of a growing settlement on a largely unexplored continent. Along with a party of allies, you’ll head out to chart these untamed lands and discover its secrets.

Of course, exploration of the unknown is dangerous, and you’ll need to be both strong and skilled to survive these “expeditions”. But you can’t gain power through taking on foes - you need to get a job. By undertaking everyday work in the town, you’ll grow in strength and unlock new abilities in combat.

There are more than 100 types of work with over 20 job classes to take on - everything from Secretary and Scholar to Herbalist and Hunter. Be careful about taking on too much in a row though - you have to balance your stamina and mood to avoid collapsing and losing stats. To introduce a twist to this traditional job-and-ability, turn-based battle, this game also features an innovative battle system called The Three CHAs. CHANGE your foes' conditions, build up a CHAIN of attacks and seize your CHANCE at inflicting heavy damage!

This combination of everyday work and exciting “expeditions” creates a hugely entertaining and distinctive gameplay loop - and one that’s quite hard to break away from when it gets its hooks in!

Tactics Ogre: Reborn

One of the greatest tactical RPGs of all time returned last year even better than before.

Fans of the genre often cite Tactics Ogre as one of its crown jewels, and it’s easy to see why. The branching story is exciting and thought-provoking, the fantastic characters are endlessly quotable, and the worldbuilding is second to none. But it’s the intensely strategic combat that perhaps shines brightest of all.

Combat encounters are varied and require mastery of the battlefield and understanding of your units to triumph. Each one is a satisfying tactical challenge that feels rewarding and satisfying in equal measure, and even dozens of hours in you’ll find yourself excited to see what challenges lie ahead.

The most recent release of the game, Tactics Ogre: Reborn, has reworked many aspects of the game, making them easier to understand and engage, while also increasing the strategic depth. This is the best way to play the game, making it an essential play for fans of tactical RPGs.

TRIANGLE STRATEGY

Take a dark and mature story where your choices matter, exciting and deeply strategic turn-based battles, and the utterly gorgeous HD-2D art style pioneered in games like OCTOPATH TRAVELER, and you have TRIANGLE STRATEGY…

…and it’s every bit as good as it sounds.

The story of this modern tactical RPG takes place in a continent whose nations went to war over salt and iron. 30 years after the last conflict, new tensions are building between the nations, and a fresh war looms.

As Lord Serenoa Wolffort, it falls on you to make morally ambiguous choices, while trying to maintain the support of your strong-minded companions… who may have their own opinions on the situation. Then you’ll lead your troops into intense battles, where your tactical know-how is essential to success.

It’s a deep, challenging game that fans of tactical RPGs will adore. As will new players - with multiple difficult options, it’s also a great entry point for the genre. Give it a go!

What’s so good about Tactics Ogre: Reborn anyway?

The beloved tactical RPG is now available on PS5, PS4, Switch and Steam… but why’s it so acclaimed? We explain how the team has made an all-time classic even better.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn art

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is more than a tactical RPG. It’s THE tactical RPG.

Since its original release, the game has been lauded as the crown jewel in the genre - a masterpiece of amazing storytelling, superb worldbuilding and astonishingly deep and strategic combat. Now it’s on modern platforms!

For those of you who may not be so familiar with the game, Tactics Ogre originally launched in 1995 for the Super Famicom in Japan. In 2010, it returned as an extensive remake on PlayStation Portable - the critically-adored Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.

The latest version of the game, Tactics Ogre: Reborn, builds on that work, improving the audio-visual presentation, refining the gameplay and even adding new features. Yes, one of the best RPGs ever made, is now even better.

If you are new to Tactics Ogre, you may be wondering: what’s all the fuss about? What makes this game so revered? Allow us to explain:

Tactics Ogre: Reborn art

It tells a mature story where your choices matter

Tactics Ogre: Reborn tells a sweeping tale of war, honor and morality. This is not a world of black and white - everything is cast in shades of grey and you’ll find your convictions tested multiple times throughout.

For example, are you willing to sacrifice your ideals to seek a greater good, or will you stand up for what you believe no matter the cost? What do you do when the ‘right thing’ isn’t necessarily the best thing for you or your allies? How much bloodshed is justified in the pursuit of peace?

The game is rife with these kinds of questions - and you’ll face them as you make difficult choices throughout the story. These decisions aren’t to be taken lightly - the story will change depending on the path of action you take.

So think carefully - even if faced with a seemingly impossible choice.

It’s set in an intricate world of rich lore and unforgettable characters

It’s worth taking some time out to reflect on the world of Tactics Ogre: Reborn, because this world is one of the most fully fleshed out settings, you’re likely to experience this year. Its history, its people and cultures, its gods - all have clearly been considered deeply and at length.

This attention to detail and commitment to creating a believable world is felt in every conversation and scenario, which makes this land feel real and believable - and events hit even harder.

The characters have received equal attention - despite the massive cast, each character you meet brims with personality, emphasized even more here than in previous versions thanks to the superb voice acting.

They’re eminently quotable too, with lines like, “When you lack a silver spoon, you fashion one of steel,” lodging themselves firmly in the mind.

Battles are tense, tactical… and improved!

Tactics Ogre is widely regarded as one of the best tactical RPGs ever made… and for good reason.

Each battle you find yourself overflows with strategic options. You’ll have to consider each unit’s abilities, placement, strengths, weaknesses, the terrain they’re fighting on and much more.

So many different elements can affect the battle, which means you can’t rely on brute strength to overcome the odds - only a clearly thought-out and executed strategy will win the day, especially when you factor in this version of the game’s reworked artificial intelligence (more on that in a bit).

Yet despite the incredible depth of the combat system, the game never feels overwhelming. The clear interface, and careful introduction of concepts means you’re always in control of what’s happening. Plus this version of the game has seen many quality of life improvements to make the game even easier to get into.

Speaking of which…

The battle and customization systems have been redesigned…

Tactics Ogre has always been acclaimed, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some room for improvement. For Tactics Ogre: Reborn, the team has made numerous changes across the game, which make it a much smoother experience - and even more strategically rich.

For example the class-wide level management system used in Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together has been replaced with a new one, where your characters all level up individually. This gives you so much more control over the composition of your units than before - and it’s a bit easier to understand!

The AI system in battles has been completely reworked. Now the enemy is able to change tactics to accommodate the terrain of the battlefield, and the state of the battle. Don’t worry though - if you set the AI to control allies, you’ll find they’re much smarter than before too.

There are also loads of general quality of life and playability improvements, including faster battles, autosave, overhauled controls, a streamlined equipment system and much more.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn art

…and new features have been added!

It’s not just about refining what was already there - the team has also added new features to add even more depth to the game. For yple, you can now scout before battles to get a better sense of what you’re facing - and plan accordingly. You can also equip new accessories called ‘Charms,’ which affect units’ stats, giving you greater control over their growth and development, and can even save up to five parties now, so you can dive into battle much faster.

During battles, you may encounter Buff Cards. Completely unique to this version of the game, they bestow bonuses on a unit for the duration of the battle. There are also new optional bonus objectives that you can attempt to complete for additional rewards.

That’s just scratching the surface - there are so many little tweaks, we don’t have the space to talk about them all here. You can find out more in our article:

Tactics Ogre: Reborn art

It has full voice acting and orchestrated music

Not only does Tactics Ogre: Reborn play better than any version before, it also sounds better!

There’s now full voice acting throughout the entire game in English and Japanese, making this powerful story even more dynamic and impactful.

The music’s also been re-recorded, with full orchestration across the whole game. The soundtrack to the game is legendary, and not only do these classic tracks now sound better than ever before, composer Hitoshi Sakimoto has recorded some new tracks specifically for this game!

It’s a glorious collection of tracks that you’ll want to listen to again and again. And if you get the Digital Deluxe Edition, you can - the Tactics Ogre: Reborn original soundtrack is included!

Tactics Ogre is the crown jewel of the tactical RPG genre, and Tactics Ogre: Reborn makes it shine brighter than ever. If you love games that make you think - both in terms of gameplay and story - then picking it up is a winning strategy.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is available now in a Standard Digital Edition for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC via STEAM and a Standard Physical Edition for PS5, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. A Digital Premium Edition is also available now on PS5, PS4 and STEAM, and includes the Tactics Ogre: Reborn Original Soundtrack in addition to the full game.

A closer look at Tactics Ogre: Reborn

The revered strategy RPG is back on PS5, PS4, Switch and Steam. Find out more about the story, characters and many enhancements to the game!
By Duncan Heaney

Strategy RPG fans rejoice, because Tactics Ogre is reborn!

In fact, that’s what it’s called: Tactics Ogre: Reborn - a massively enhanced edition of the revered tactical RPG, featuring improved graphics and sound, improved battle mechanics, updated game design and much more.

The game’s out now for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch and Steam!

Some of you will be already aware of Tactics Ogre - and are eager to learn what’s new in this edition of the game. But first, for those of you who may be unfamiliar with this genuine classic, we should start with a little history lesson…

A brief history of Tactics Ogre

The Ogre Battle series, to which Tactics Ogre belongs, started way back in 1993.

The first game in the series to be released, Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen, launched that year in Japan for the Super Famicon, and arrived in 1995 for players in North America. A unique combination of real time tactics and RPG, it was a real breath of fresh air for gamers, and it became a hit.

In 1995, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together was released in Japan for the Super Famicon. It would later be ported to PlayStation and release in North America in 1998. The game took a different approach to the March of the Black Queen, featuring a new isometric perspective, turn-based battles, super-detailed pixel art, and an intricate, branching story with multiple endings.

The game was one of those cases of lightning in a bottle - the combination of elements resonated with players, winning it a following that persists to this day.

In 2010, a team that included many of the original developers of Tactics Ogre created a remake for PlayStation Portable. It released in Japan as Tactics Ogre: Wheel of Fortune, and a year later in the US and Europe under its original name: Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.

This successor featured a substantially improved story, a world filled with even more colorful characters, an updated game with new systems and a wealth of content to satisfy even the most hardcore players. The game was a critical smash, winning positive reviews from media and players alike.

Which brings us to 2022 and Tactics Ogre: Reborn! This new version of the game is based on the 2010 remake but features significant changes that make an already great game even greater!

What’s new in Tactics Ogre: Reborn?

Tactics Ogre: Reborn features a host of enhancements to visuals, sound, game design and more. Here’s a brief rundown of some of these improvements:

High-Definition Characters and Backgrounds

The beautifully detailed characters and backgrounds of the original Tactics Ogre have been recreated in high definition.

The detailed pixel art that gives the game its unique feel has also been preserved and enhanced to look great on modern HD displays.

Fully Updated User Interface

Not only is the user interface now in high definition, it’s also been redesigned to make information easier to understand, with streamlined controls.

Sound improvements

All dialogue in Tactics Ogre: Reborn is fully voiced, bringing new life to the complex motivations of the characters that make up the factions and shifting political alliances of this epic story. You can choose between English and Japanese voices, with the ability to switch between them in the config menu at any time.

The sound effects have also been remastered, immersing you in battle like never before.

Tactics Ogre composer Hitoshi Sakimoto rerecorded the entire soundtrack with a live orchestra. At times the melodies are ominous and filled with tension, while at other times they offer a gentle reprieve. The lingering notes and haunting echoes only found in a live performance raise the immersion in the gameplay to another level.

The soundtrack even includes entirely new pieces composed just for Tactics Ogre: Reborn!

A redesigned battle system

Building on what worked in previous versions of Tactics Ogre, this new game incorporates new elements as part of an overall redesign of the battle system. Here’s a brief introduction to some of the new features that await.

Unit-by-Unit Level System

The class-wide level management system found in Tactics Ogre: Wheel of Fortune has been replaced by a unit-by-unit level system.

Each unit advances differently depending on its class, making for an elegant system that lets players plot their way through endless combinations of equipment, skills, and magic for each unit.

This means that the player is able to consider the bigger picture, and decide on the overall composition of units to bring into each battle.

Battle AI overhaul

The team has made significant changes to the artificial intelligence (AI) of your opponents in combat.

The enemy’s tactics change depending on the layout of the battlefield and the state of the battle.

Thinking about how to adapt your plans as the situation changes keeps battles engaging and fresh.

Playability improvements

Tactics Ogre: Reborn has seen numerous playability improvements, such as a quicker pace of battle, auto save, and a complete overhaul to the controls.

All this makes it easier to get into the game than ever before.

Story and characters

We’ve talked a lot about what’s new, but those unfamiliar with the game may be wondering: what’s it all about? Here’s the basic setup for the story:

The game is set on the Valerian Isles, jewels of the Obero Sea. Long a center of naval commerce, the people of the isles struggled throughout history for dominion over her shores.

Finally there rose a man to put an end to this conflict: Dorgalua Oberyth - but history would know him as the "Dynast-King". King Dorgalua strove to stamp out the hatred among the people of the isles, and for half a century, Valeria knew prosperity.

Yet upon the king's death, civil war erupted once more, as three factions vied for control: the Bakram, who comprised much of Valeria's nobility; the Galgastani, whose people made up the majority of the isles' population; and the Walister, who numbered but few.

The isles were soon divided between the Bakram and Galgastani, and an uneasy peace settled across the land. Yet none believe the calm will last...

What follows is an epic tale of war, as many memorable characters get swept up into an escalating conflict. Let’s meet a few:

Denam Pavel

  • Walister, 18 years old
  • Voice actor: Max Mittelman

Denam is the main hero of this tale.

His father, Abuna Prancet, was taken by the Dark Knights when they raided his hometown of Golyat. Later, as a member of the Walister Resistance, Denam fights against the Bakram and the Galgastani with the help of his sister, Catiua, and his childhood friend, Vyce.

Denam has a strong sense of justice, and the iron will be needed to bring about the change he envisions. A thoughtful young man, he harbors doubts about the meaning of their struggle.

Catiua Pavel

  • Walister, 19 years old
  • Voice actor: Victoria Atkin

Catiua is Denam’s sister and a fellow Walister. Having lost their mother at a young age, she and Denam were raised by their father, Abuna Prancet, and now Catiua has an overbearing sense of affection for her brother.

Thanks to the teachings of her father, she is well along her way to becoming an oracle, and she puts her skills to use fighting alongside Denam and their childhood friend Vyce. Yet it is less her principles that drive her to join their struggle, and more her fear of losing her brother.

Vyce Bozeck

  • Walister, 18 years old
  • Voice Actor: Jason Spisak

The Dark Knights slew Vyce’s father, the only family he had left, leaving him an orphan. He cannot abide the oppression of the Walister, so he eagerly joins the struggle against their tormentors.

A capable man of action, he and Denam complement each other well.

Dorgalua Oberyth Valeria

  • Bakram, 65 years old at the time of his death

Dorgalua used his peerless intellect and charm to forge the bickering realms of Valeria into a single kingdom.

With the isles united, he set about implementing his policy of racial reconciliation, and the people hailed him for his wisdom. Yet after his death, there was no clear successor to the throne, and Valeria was once again plunged into civil war.

In honor of his great achievements, he is often referred to as the Dynast-King.

Juda Ronwey

Juda is the former lord of Almorica Castle. When civil war overtook Valeria, fewer than one person in ten were Walister, and it was Duke Ronwey who led them in resistance against the Galgastani.

He fought bravely for half a year, before finally meeting defeat. Now he is held prisoner.

Brantyn Morne

  • Bakram, 49 years old

Brantyn is the ruler of the Bakram-Valerian Kingdom.

When King Dorgalua died, Brantyn swiftly rose from his position in the clergy to become regent of the Kingdom of Valeria - such was his thirst for the reigns of power. Dorgalua’s trust in him had been absolute, so the motives behind this sudden slight against the royal house are unclear.

Lanselot Tartaros

The Captain of the Dark Knights Loslorien, which hail from the mighty Holy Lodissian Empire on the continent north of the Valerian Isles. As the Dark Knights answer directly to High Priest Sardian, ruler of the Holy Lodissian Empire, Lanselot is widely rumored to be the right hand of the high priest.

The Dark Knights have come to Valeria under a secret agreement with Regent Brantyn, leader of the Bakram.

Leundar Balbatos

  • Galgastani, 43 years old

Leundar is Leader of the Kingdom of Galgastan. To secure the southern half of Valeria, he waged a blood war to eradicate the Walister.

Many of his own people attempted to revolt in the face of such barbarism, but Balbatos turned his forces against them as well, making it clear that he would rule Galgastan with an icy, iron fist.

We hope you’re excited to play this tactical tour-de-force. Tactics Ogre is reborn today on PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.

What’s new in Tactics Ogre: Reborn?

We explain some of the new and improved features coming to the tactical RPG masterpiece!
By Duncan Heaney

We’ve talked about the basic gameplay systems of Tactics Ogre: Reborn, and introduced some of the amazing characters, but we know that what a lot of you really want to know is: what’s new in this version of the game?

The short answer is… quite a lot. The team has improved many parts of the already critically-beloved Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, and even implemented some new features entirely! These additions make Tactics Ogre: Reborn more fun to play, give you more control and add even more strategic depth to the game!

Read on, and we’ll go through some of these enhancements!

Equipment requirements have changed

In Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, there were requirements for using equipment such as weapons and armor, consumables such as HP recovery items, and magic. For example, some types of equipment had level restrictions, while others required separate specialty skills to equip.

In Tactics Ogre: Reborn, you can equip and use anything as soon as you find it. However, there are still certain class restrictions for equipment and magic. For example, a knight cannot equip a bow, a cleric cannot equip attack spells, and so on.

Each unit has seven equipment slots for weapons and armor, four slots for consumables, and four slots for magic. Deciding what combination of gear and abilities to bring into battle is more satisfying and fun than ever!

Skill rules have been revamped

As units gain levels, they acquire special abilities or "skills," which give each class its own distinct play style in battle. As with consumables and magic, each unit can equip up to four skills, so you’ll have to put thought into the specific combination of skills you want to take into battle.

The team has also added new skills and retuned the effects of others to further broaden the range of possible strategies - all while maintaining the unique feel of each class.

For example, if you attack an enemy standing between your own units, the new Pincer Attack skill will trigger, causing the ally behind the enemy to make an additional attack.

Finishing moves, ninjutsu and war dances have been updated

Units can learn powerful finishing moves by meeting certain requirements.

In Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, finishing moves, ninjutsu, and war dances required the accumulation and use of Technical Points (TP) and sometimes certain reagents as well. Now all these abilities simply require Magic Points (MP), just like magic.

With these abilities unified to using MP, it’s much simpler to assess the status of units during battle, and easier to construct a strategy.

Charms: a new type of item that lets you develop a unit’s stats the way you want!

Charms are new items introduced to give you more control over the development of your units’ stats. You can use charms on the party formation screen to improve and alter your units. Charms can be found during battle, and after battle as a reward.

Charms include these effects:

  • Raise a unit's level by 1
  • Grant experience points
  • Permanently increase stats such as STR (strength) or AGI (agility)
  • Change a unit’s element to another element (e.g., from air to holy)

Charms allow you to customize your units exactly how you want them, without having to spend time grinding levels

New Battle Party Screen features

The battle party screen, used to select and prepare units before sending them into battle, has also gained new features that make assembling your battle party easier than ever. Here, we will introduce two of these features.

The Scout command lets you gather information before entering battle!

By selecting Scout on the battle party screen, you can gain insight into the terrain and enemy forces (location, level, class, equipment, etc.).

Since you can change your units’ classes and equipment on the battle party screen, you can use the information gained to assemble the best party possible.

You can now save up to 5 different battle parties!

By having a variety of battle parties prepared for various situations - such as the number of enemy units or enemy class composition - you can quickly select the optimal party based on information obtained by scouting before battle.

Updates to the battle system

Improvements to battles make Tactics Ogre: Reborn an even more compelling tactical RPG. Here are seven updates you should be excited about:

Buff cards let you turn the tables

During battle, items called buff cards appear on the battlefield.

When a unit picks up a buff card it gains bonuses that last for the rest of the battle, such as increased attack power or critical chance. The bonus gained depends on the type of card found. Your units must vie against the enemy to obtain these buff cards, and how you move and respond in combat to gain the advantage they provide is a thrilling aspect of battle unique to this title.

A unit can have the effects of up to four buff cards at once, and the more buff cards with similar effects are stacked, the greater the effect, dynamically changing the shape of the battle as units acquire more cards.

All-new enemy AI that adapts to each situation

The enemy now considers the terrain, recognizing features such as narrow roads and wide, open plains, as well as the player’s movement, using this information to decide where the battlefront is and choose the best point to engage the player.

In addition, how the enemy responds to the buff cards that appear at random creates an ever-changing battle that never feels repetitive.

Improved ally AI too!

If you want to let the computer control your units, you have four different AI settings to choose from: Fierce Attacker, Stalwart Defender, Distant Striker, and Ardent Mender.

You can also quickly toggle between manual and AI control for all your units at once from the battle party screen or during battle!

Bonus objectives bestow additional rewards

In addition to the normal battle victory conditions, each battle also has a new bonus objective.

Players will be presented with a goal such as "win with a knight in the battle party" or "obtain a buff card," and if they complete the objective, they will receive items such as charms and equipment to strengthen their forces.

Take on this extra challenge if you feel like testing your abilities!

Trajectory prediction eliminates costly mistakes

When firing weapons like bows and crossbows, or casting spells that launch a projectile, such as Deadshot, you can display trajectory prediction to make sure that the attacker can hit the target without misfiring on their own troops.

You can revive incapacitated units

When enemy attacks reduce a unit’s HP to zero, it is “Incapacitated.”

A countdown is displayed above the Incapacitated unit, and the unit can be revived with consumables or magic before the countdown reaches 0. Revived units can act immediately after being raised, allowing them to move, recover HP, or take other actions to regain their footing.

Units can be revived any number of times, as long as the countdown never reaches 0. If the countdown does reach 0, the unit is "Deceased" and cannot be revived again.

Training battles have been added… and random encounters removed

The random encounters that occurred when moving on the world map have been removed. Instead, you can now engage in training battles at specific locations whenever you like.

Units cannot be killed in training battles, making the leveling process much easier.

General balance adjustments

In addition to all the new elements, existing ones have been rebalanced from Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together to make for a more enjoyable game.

These include:

Adjustment to enemy forces

Adjustments have been made to the stats, equipment, and skills of each unit, as well as their positions on the battlefield.

Addition of the Party Level

The party level is the level of your army as a whole, which serves as a level cap for individual units. The party level cap rises gradually as players advance through the story, preventing players from grinding to arbitrarily high levels to brute force their way through battles.

The introduction of the party level makes the use of each unit more important, better emphasizing the tactical nature of the game.

Since the party level is set slightly higher than the level of enemy units, it should no longer feel as if the difficulty jumps sharply after leveling up. Players can easily raise their units’ levels through training battles and charms, so even first-time players should find the game approachable.

Adjustments to classes, equipment, consumables, magic, skills, finishing moves, and debuffs

The team has optimized equipment, consumables, magic, skills, finishing moves, and debuffs as part of the AI update and with the goal of making the flow of battle simpler and easier to understand.

Stats and ability activation requirements have been adjusted, and there have been additions and removals in all these categories where appropriate. The rogue class is also reserved for enemy units now.

Shops have been improved

Shops - essential to progressing through the game’s battles - have been improved to provide a smoother experience, allowing players to easily buy and sell equipment, consumables, magic, and other items, as well as hire new units.

An improved user interface keeps useful information at your fingertips! When buying or selling equipment, you can quickly check information such as the current number of items in your inventory and which units have them equipped.

Crafting, which enhances the performance of equipment and consumables, now succeeds 100% of the time, eliminating wasted ingredients and the need to redo failed attempts. In addition, a convenient function to craft multiple items at once has been added.

By Square Enix Team

There are a multitude of reasons that Tactics Ogre is considered a crown jewel of tactical RPGs. There is, of course, the intensely strategic combat, the branching narrative, the evocative art design and amazing music to name but a few.

There’s also the impressive world-building and unforgettable characters - a richly drawn group of personalities who add depth to this amazing world.

Previously, we showed you some of the cast, including protagonist Denam Pavel. Today, we’ll introduce a few more - and also showcase some of the classes you can command in battles!

Lanselot Hamilton

“Risking your life is one thing. Losing it is another.”

  • Xenobian, 38 years old, born on the 6th of Twinscale.

Lanselot was born in the city of Valna in Charlom, and formerly captained the Holy Knights of the Kingdom of New Xenobia. He was stripped of his status and banished by King Tristan for the misconduct of his knights.

He encounters Denam while roaming the lands with a small band of fellow knights seeking mercenary work.

Warren Omon

“I, too, have heard tell of this diviner, but I am not he.”

  • Xenobian, 63 years old, born on the 19th of Flamescale.

Warren once led the Mages Regiment of the Kingdom of New Xenobia. He is more a prophet than a teller of fortunes.

Like Lanselot, he was banished from Xenobia for misconduct.

Canopus Wolph

“I am Canopus. Step forward and meet your fate, dogs!”

  • Xenobian, 48 years old, born on the 5th of Darkscale.

One of the winged folk, from the city of Peshaval in Charlom, Canopus once captained the Beast Legion of the Kingdom of New Xenobia. Like Lanselot, he was banished from Xenobia for misconduct.

He appears young in years, as the winged live to thrice the age of men. He can turn the very winds against his foes, earning him the name "Wind Caller."

Mirdyn Walhorn

“There was little you could do.”

  • Xenobian, 28 years old, born on the 9th of Windscale.

Mirdyn was born in the Dalmuhd city of Konsh. He once served with the Holy Knights of the Kingdom of New Xenobia. He is a man of few words.

Womenfolk hoping to be wooed by the handsome warrior are left disappointed, as he can manage little more than a smile. Gildas and Mirdyn are as chalk and cheese.

Gildas W. Byrne

“We're outlaws. No place waiting for us back home, neh?”

  • Xenobian, 32 years old, born on the 4th of Firescale.

Born in the Hyland city of Xandu, Gildas once served with the Holy Knights of the Kingdom of New Xenobia.

A lover of drink and women, chivalry is not his strong point. However, he is also a dependable comrade who fights with great skill. Gildas and Mirdyn are followers of Lanselot, who was banished from Xenobia

Iuria Wolph

  • Xenobian, 18 years old.

Iuria is from the city of Peshaval in Charlom. She is sister to Canopus. A songstress of renown, her voice is said to soothe the hearts of all who hear it.

Winged womenfolk are seldom seen in public, but Iuria seems fond of attention.

Deneb Rove

“Oooh, you're cute when you're angry!”

  • Xenobian, age unknown.

A woman of unknown origin, Deneb once served with the Mages Regiment of the Kingdom of New Xenobia. She was a principal architect of the kingdom's establishment.

Her thirst for arcane knowledge is boundless, and she has come to Valeria to gather funds to further her studies. She is also remarkably fond of pumpkins.

Lanselot Tartaros

“They think that only from without the castle walls may one voice discontent. Not realizing that the quickest way to the throne is a knife to the king's ribs.”

  • Lodissian, 38 years old, born on the 22nd of Earthscale.

Lanselot is high champion of the Dark Knights Loslorien. He was sent to Valeria when a secret treaty was forged between the Holy Lodissian Empire and the Bakram leader Brantyn Morne.

The Dark Knights report directly to High Priest Sardian, ruler of the Holy Lodissian Empire, and Lanselot is thought to be his top lieutenant.

Balxephon V. Rahms

“The whelp has grown. Let's see how much!”

  • Lodissian, 40 years old.

Balxephon V. Rahms is second-in-command of the Dark Knights Loslorien, hailing from Galius, seat of the Holy Lodissian Empire.

He is the son of Stratarchis Vogras, who commanded five of the orders of knighthood in Lodis. Loslorien enjoys independence from the Senate thanks to the influence of Vogras.

Volaq Windsalf

“Do you not trust us, Lord Regent? That would be most unfortunate.”

  • 35 years old.

Volaq is a Loslorien commander, and member of their most elite strike force. Little is known of his past, or how he came to join the Dark Knights. His loyalty to Lodis is unquestionable, and he has earned a great deal of respect from those serving under him.

A career soldier, he never lets personal matters interfere with his duties.

Martym Noumous

“As imprudent as you are impudent. I'll dress you like a holiday goose, hedge knight!”

  • Lodissian, 30 years old, born on the 20th of Seascale.

A Loslorien commander from Galius, seat of the Holy Lodissian Empire, and member of their most elite strike force, Martym is known for his cunning swordplay.

He will stop at nothing to achieve victory, living by the motto, "It always comes to blood." Though his words lack grace, he wields a blade with great finesse.

Barbas Dahd Geuse

“You want to kill us. I see it in your eyes. Put down your words, and take up your sword.”

  • Lodissian, 34 years old, born on the 17th of Blackscale.

Barbas is a Loslorien commander hailing from Bomouth on the borderlands of Lodis, and member of their most elite strike force.

He is a giant of a man, and the most bloodthirsty of the seven Loslorien commanders. He was put on trial for beating a superior to death but was saved from execution by Lanselot Tartaros.

Oz Moh Glacius

“You squabble over Valeria like beggars over scraps. The sooner she is rid of you, the better!”

  • Lodissian, 27 years old, born on the 1st of Shadowscale.

Oz Moh Glacius is a Loslorien commander from Galius, seat of the Holy Lodissian Empire, member of their most elite strike force, and twin brother to Dame Ozma.

He is an expert swordsman, receiving top honors from the Xanam Officer's Academy. After serving as commander of three regiments of the Ganan Division for a number of years, he was assigned to the Dark Knights. His sadistic nature is evident in his actions on the field of battle and in his questioning of prisoners.

Ozma Moh Glacius

“Brute force, is that all you understand? Perhaps it's time I versed you in the higher arts.”

  • Lodissian, 27 years old, born on the 1st of Shadowscale.

A Loslorien commander from Galius, seat of the Holy Lodissian Empire, Ozma is of the noble House Glacius - renowned for their founding role in the Galius Guild of Magi, ministers of magic in Lodis.

Twin sister to the Dark Knight Oz, she wields both spell and blade with equal skill.

Andoras Gaffryn

“You may find her a somewhat... unwilling companion. Ha ha!”

  • Lodissian, 32 years old.

A Loslorien commander from Niemaran, a small town in the borderlands of Lodis. He is last born of the former Nildahme royal house, which once wielded great power throughout the Sea of Lhai region.

He prefers hand-to-hand combat to swordplay and is a masterful strategist.

Classes

In battle, you’ll command a wide variety of units of different classes, each with their own abilities. Here’s a look at some of the classes in the game:

Warrior

Warriors are mainstay melee fighters, adept with a wide variety of weapons - Jack-of-all-trades, master of none.

Warriors are by no means flashy but can equip a wide range of weapons and armor, playing an active role on the front lines in the early game.

Archer

Archers are ranged attackers adept with a bow and arrow, and capable of taking down enemies from a distance.

Archers use bows and crossbows to chip away at enemy health from the high ground. They’re an indispensable support class on the battlefield.

Wizard

Wizards are a back-line support class that wields a wide variety of magic, from offensive damage spells to debuffs.

Wizards play a vital role in the early game, showing their true worth in the hardest-fought battles.

Cleric

This is a back-line support class that mainly cast spells to restore HP and cure various ailments.

Clerics are mainstay healers who remain indispensable to the battle party even into the late game.

Rune Fencer / Valkyrie

This well-rounded caster of attack and healing spells is also adept at sword and spearplay.

It’s a balanced class can attack aggressively in the front lines or support with spells from the rear.

Knight

An excellent frontline class that uses its high defense and a smattering of healing spells to protect the battle party.

Knights are indispensable units that serve as a bulwark against the enemy’s advance.

Berserker

Entirely unconcerned with their own safety, berserkers charge into the front lines to assail their enemies with weapons bared.

Berserkers boast devastating attacks, making them a valuable part of the battle party. However, they themselves have relatively weak defenses and are easily damaged.

Terror Knight

The howls of tormented spirits can be heard with every step of the terror knight's boots. This class is skilled in weakening enemy attacks and defense.

Like the knight, terror knights take advantage of their high defensive capabilities to shield the battle party while engaging the enemy on the front lines.

Ninja / Kunoichi

This nimble class utilizes its mobility to quickly deploy its power wherever needed, whether on the front lines or in the rear. Men are called ninja, while women are called kunoichi.

The ninjutsu spells they wield manipulate various spirits to unleash punishing attacks on even distant enemies

Take a new look at Tactics Ogre: Reborn

New to Tactics Ogre - or just want a refresh? We take a look at the gameplay systems in the game and why it’s still considered the crown jewel of tactical RPGS!
By Duncan Heaney

Ready for a little update on Tactics Ogre: Reborn?

Last time we gave you a general overview, revealing the story, characters and new enhancements coming to this tactical RPG classic. Today, we want to get into the nitty-gritty and talk about some of its different gameplay systems.

In many ways, Tactics Ogre was the trendsetter for tactical RPGs, with many subsequent games - both from Square Enix and other companies - taking inspiration from its systems. It’s a testament to the depth of the systems in the game and the quality of the execution of those ideas, that many still consider the game to be one of the crown jewels of the genre.

In Tactics Ogre: Reborn , some elements remain the same, while others have been refined even further to offer the best version of the game yet! We’ll go into some of the enhancements at a later date - for now, let’s take a look at some of the basics of gameplay.

Tarot Cards and Character Creation

Tarot cards are traditionally associated with fortune telling, but they’re also deeply connected to the Ogre Battle series.

In Tactics Ogre they play an important role - not just in gameplay, but also in character creation.

When you’re setting up the character at the start of the game, you’ll be asked to choose a date of birth for the protagonist, Denam.

Then 22 of the tarot cards, known as the major arcana, will appear and pose questions.

Denam’s initial stats will be determined by your answers to these questions.

Elements explained

There are eight elements in Tactics Ogre: Reborn : fire, water, wind, earth, darkness, light, lightning, and ice. The final step in character creation is selecting which associated god in the myth of Xytegenia Denam should seek protection from (more on them in a bit).

Units other than Denam will also have a set element. Matching it with the element of the magic or weapon they use lets them unleash even greater power.

For example, if a fire-element wizard uses fire magic, they will inflict even greater damage!

Elements also have respective elements they’re stronger or weaker against. For example, earth is weak against wind, but strong against lightning.

The Gods who govern the elements

Eight gods govern the elements. The illustrations here have been created by Tsubasa Masao, who was in charge of the character design for the PSP version of the game!

Xoshonell, Goddess of Fire

Xoshonell is the firstborn child of Bora, the Celestial, and Anem, the Terrestrial. Though this makes her the elder sister of Philaha, Vaseqsa, and the others, she has always remained neutral, siding with none of her siblings.

Even in the war against the forces of darkness, later known as the Ogre Battle, she maintained her neutrality, providing no aid to Philaha. Yet Philaha did not begrudge her this, knowing well that of all the gods and goddesses, none wielded greater power than Xoshonell--not even Philaha himself.

Aware of the supreme power at her command, Xoshonell never sought to cast herself with one side or the other. Rather, she is said to provide whatever aid she can to those who seek her help and truly need it. Though hidden beneath helm and plate, the divine beauty of her countenance - and, indeed, her every feature - is without compare.

Greuza, Goddess of Water

Greuza is the child of Phora, Goddess of Air, and Vaseqsa, God of the Sea.

Like Ishtar, Greuza was born spear in hand and clad in armor, and she commands a divine host five hundred thousand strong in service of Philaha. A dutiful goddess renowned for her jealous nature, she is said to take the form of a dragon and unleash terrible storms whenever her husband Zamunza, God of the Feast, is unfaithful.

Like Hahnela, she has been worshipped in Valeria since antiquity, and followers of the Vasque religion, who hold Greuza foremost among all the gods, revere her as a symbol of vengeance and power.

Hahnela, Goddess of Air

Hahnela is the child of Horup, God of Knowledge, and Phelana, Goddess of Justice. The gods of the Four Winds, including Zephyros and Euros, are said to spring from her footsteps.

As would be expected of an island nation, the people of Valeria have always relied on the bounty of the ocean. This alone explains their reverence for the winds Hahnela breathes into life, but as the patron goddess of the sea, she is doubly honored.

Vaasa, Goddess of Earth

Heaven and earth were cleaved into two by the death of Bora, the Celestial, and Anem, the Terrestrial, giving birth to the world. Vaasa was born from the keening roar as ground and sky were rent apart. She took Anem's place as steward of the land, and in concert with Philaha, she is said to create life and bring abundance to the earth.

Yet when the lord of the underworld, Demunza, absconded with her daughter Danika, in her grief, Vaasa began to divide this abundance between the world above, and the underworld below. This gave rise to the seasons, and the rhythm of life and death that accompany them.

Vaasa is revered as a goddess of the harvest, yet she is also honored in funerary rites as the one who guides the dead on their journey into the afterlife.

Nestharot, Goddess of Lightning

Nestharot is the child of Aranda, God of Clouds, and Phelana, Goddess of Justice. Also known as the goddess of judgment, Nestharot's gears are said to symbolize divine order.

Along with Xoshonell, Goddess of Fire, Nestharot remained neutral during the Ogre Battle, and upon the end of that great war, it was her judgment that banished the ogres within the Abyss for tens of millions of years.

In Valeria, the downtrodden have long been Nestharot's devoted followers, drawn to her impartiality and fairness. Even after the Dynast-King Dorgalua united the isles in the worship of Philaha as the one true god, many still prayed to her in secret.

Lyuneram, Goddess of Ice

Lyuneram sprang forth from the tears shed by Morada, God of the Mountains, upon the death of Anem, the Terrestrial. It is said that as Lyuneram was born, Morada's tears turned to ice, creating vast tundra and glaciers.

Later, when Philaha become lord of the heavens and did battle with his elder brother Demunza, Lyuneram sided with Demunza against him. Not even Philaha and the blazing light of the sun could pierce Lyuneram's ramparts of bitter ice, and his forces were brought to a standstill. Seizing this opportunity, Demunza descended into the Abyss, where he became king. Lyuneram could only watch as he left, and in the end surrendered herself to Philaha.

Yet in his boundless compassion, Philaha forgave Lyuneram, and gave her a seat among the gods of the heavens.

Ashmedai, God of Darkness

Ashmedai marched beneath Demunza's banner at the head of one hundred eight legions in the Ogre Battle. Though much of Ashmedai's power was taken from him following his defeat, even in his weakened state, no mortal could hope to challenge him.

Ashmedai is no longer believed to occupy his time plotting great evils, and it is even rumored he aids the mortal realm from time to time. There are many theories as to why this may be, but the common belief is that in the ancient days of Xytegenia, Ashmedai was summoned by the alchemist Gatham, with whom he lost a bet. In payment, Ashmedai was made to assist mortals who sought his help.

None can say for certain whether Ashmedai lends his aid to suit his own whims, or as a result of Gatham's cunning, but whatever the case, he does not seem to be openly hostile.

Ishtar, Goddess of Light

When the sun god Philaha and his siblings struck down their father, Bora, ruler of the heavens, Ishtar sprang from the blood that flowed from Bora's dying body. Ishtar was born wielding a silver sword, and wearing gleaming armor and robes of white. With his dying breath, Bora commanded his newborn daughter to slay Philaha. But Ishtar was wise. Filled with shame at the thought of such a wicked act, she joined Philaha's ranks instead. Philaha gladly welcomed his younger sister, and gave her a place alongside the other gods.

Ishtar's white garb symbolizes her purity, while her alabaster blade and armor embody victory. She is revered as the goddess of glory and triumph, giving the cause of those who worship her the certitude of justice.

Units and classes

Denam is more than just a capable warrior - he becomes the leader of his own order of knights!

The individuals who make up this order are known as Units, and they have a wide variety of classes, each with different abilities.

Units grow and become stronger primarily by defeating enemies or being victorious in battle, as well as purchasing equipment from shops, or learning magic.

The stat increases upon levelling up are different for each class. For example, INT (intellect) increases more easily for a Wizard, Berserkers find it easier to build strength, and a Knight develops Vitality more easily.

You can build your own unique order - who will you make an ally, and which classes will you train?

The Battle System

Tactics Ogre: Reborn offers deep, rewarding combat scenarios that require you to think tactically to succeed.

When moving around the world map, you may enter battle by when you reach your destination - or on the path along the way.

Once you enter battle, you move to the party formation screen. Here, you can select units to take part in the battle and determine their formation. You can also check unit information and change equipment.

The number of units that can take part depends on the specific battle.

When a battle begins, the victory condition will be displayed.

Battles in Tactics Ogre: Reborn are not turn-based. They proceed according to the RT (Recovery Time) system. Units take their turn in accordance with factors such as their agility and equipment - regardless of whether they are friend or foe.

When it is a unit’s turn to act, this is called the AT (Attack Turn) state.

When the victory conditions are fulfilled, you will win the battle.

If the victory condition specifies the defeat of a certain unit, then the battle will end when that unit is defeated - even if there are other surviving enemies.

In the results following victory, you will be able to obtain item pouches that you didn’t retrieve in the battle.

You can also check information on the EXP that your troops gained and any units that levelled up.

A branching narrative with multiple endings

Tactics Ogre: Reborn features a multi-scenario system, where developments in the story and its eventual conclusion can change depending on the decisions you make.

Denam faces many difficult choices over the course of the game, and the people he meets - and the world of Valeria itself - will be shaken by his decisions.

All kinds of shocking developments await you - from encounters with new characters to allies fracturing from friend to foe according to their ideology.

That was just a very broad overview of the gameplay of Tactics Ogre: Reborn, but it barely scratches the surface of what awaits you.

The game launches physically and digitally for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam on November 11, 2022 and is available to preorder now.

Anyone who pre-orders the Standard Edition digitally will receive a Tactics Ogre: Reborn Digital Mini Soundtrack Download Code, which includes a selection of three songs from the Tactics Ogre: Reborn Original Soundtrack - all composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto and recorded live.

In addition, a Digital Premium Edition is available for PS5, PS4 and STEAM. This includes the game, as well the full Tactics Ogre: Reborn Original Soundtrack.

Preorder the Digital Premium Edition, and you’ll get a Tactics Ogre (1995) Digital Mini Soundtrack, which includes a selection of 10 chiptune songs from the original game. Perfected back in the day, these chiptune originals have a slightly different feel from the re-recorded live music found in Tactics Ogre: Reborn!

We’ll have much more to share about the game as we get closer release, so be sure to follow Square Enix on social media for new and updates:
