FOAMSTARS

FOAMSTARS will be free to play from October 4, 2024!

The Producer of FOAMSTARS reveals future updates for the action-packed multiplayer shooter, including the game becoming free to play and an updated roadmap for the coming months.
By Kosuke Okatani

This is Kosuke Okatani, producer of FOAMSTARS.

Thank you for playing our game. The team and I truly appreciate your support! Today, I'd like to let you know the plan for future updates to FOAMSTARS.

First Announcement

First of all, I would like to let you know about a change to the pricing of FOAMSTARS.

We have had a lot of discussions about how we can make the game more accessible and as we mentioned in a press release that was published recently, we have decided to make FOAMSTARS a free-to-play title starting Friday 4 October (UTC).

Previously, players needed to be members of PlayStation Plus if they wanted to play FOAMSTARS. However, in line with the above change, FOAMSTARS will be playable for both Playstation®Plus subscribers and non-subscribers starting Friday 4th October. (UTC)

Changes taking place from Friday 4 October

Before:

  • Game price: Regional pricing
  • PlayStation Plus Membership required to play FOAMSTARS

After:

  • Game price: Free
  • Available to non-PlayStation Plus subscribers

These changes will make it much easier for new players to get in on the fun, so we hope you’ll take this as an opportunity to invite your friends along and have even more fun with FOAMSTARS.

Legacy Gifts DLC

And, to show our appreciation to everybody who has purchased the game already, or who downloaded it between 6 February and 5 March when it was included in the PlayStation Plus monthly games, we will be releasing a set of special items called the Legacy Gifts DLC.

These are special, limited-edition items that can only be obtained by downloading this DLC.

Items included in the Legacy Gifts DLC:

  • Exclusive colour variant Bubble Beastie Skins × 12 in total
  • Exclusive slideboard design × 1
  • "Legacy" title × 1

Note1: Details on how to access this DLC will be released at a later date.

Note2: This is still under development, so the content and timings listed above are subject to change.

We hope that you will continue to enjoy FOAMSTARS

Roadmap for the Next Three Months

We are excited to be able to share the season roadmap for the next three months, including the new season, Golden Beats, which will be starting soon!

Each of these new seasons will include a season pass and new content, skins and events.

Details of Golden Beats season

New Foamstar: Bublo Espuma

The crowned king of Foam Smash, Bublo Espuma enters the fray!

Bublo uses his Gatling-style foam gun to completely overpower his opponents, while his skills keep competitors at bay. Expect some truly monarchical mayhem with Bublo around.

We are also planning to release the patch notes for the new season, Golden Beats, tomorrow. The patch notes include more information about Bublo, as well as details about adjustments to the timings for Ranked Party, new matchmaking features, balance adjustments, bug fixes and more. Be sure to take a look.

Details of October season

FOAMSTARS will switch to a free-to-play title to coincide with the start of this season, and the requirement for players to be PlayStation Plus members will also be removed.

New Smash the Star maps

Smash the Star is a game mode that really represents FOAMSTARS, and is one of the most popular, so to help players to enjoy it even more, we will be adding some new maps to Smash the Star.

A total of five maps will be made available for Smash the Star: four Rubber Duck Party maps and the Pitchside Homerun Party! from the Extreme Party game mode.

New maps:

  1. Shoreline Shoppin' Spree
  2. Rubber Duck's Spa-larious Oasis
  3. Fusion Coaster Kingdom
  4. Sing Swing Circus
  5. Dancefloor Dreamland (Pitchside Homerun Party! map)

Note: (5) will not be selected for Ranked Party.

New boss battles for Squad Missions

Squad Missions see players formed into teams and taking on challenging missions. This game mode will be updated so that boss monsters will appear when certain conditions are met.

These boss battles will be pretty difficult, so we will be preparing some special rewards specifically for them. If you think you've got what it takes, then give it a try.

Added Diamond Trade

Diamond Trade is an upcoming feature that will make FOAMSTARS even more fun to play. During regular gameplay, players will be able to collect a type of token call Diamond Chips and exchange them for a wide variety of items.

Further details about this feature will be revealed in the future, so please keep an eye out for more information.

Details of November season

New Smash the Star map

For this season, we will be adding an entirely new Smash the Star map! Stay tuned for further announcements.

New boss battles and bosses for Squad Missions

New boss monsters will be added to the new boss battles introduced in the previous season.

We hope that you will continue to enjoy FOAMSTARS over the next three months and beyond.

Note: This is still under development, so the content and timings listed above are subject to change.

And Finally...

Let me once again thank you for playing FOAMSTARS.

I always appreciate reading feedback from players on social media. In particular, the team and I have taken a huge amount of encouragement from the kind words offered by players. And we love to admire the fan art and videos that everybody puts so much love into.

(Although we're honestly quite surprised that people love Rave Breaker as much as they do! We are working hard on some cool new skins for Rave Breaker, so watch this space!)

The team and I will continue to work hard to meet your expectations, and to provide an even more deeply enjoyable gameplay experience.

Thank you for supporting FOAMSTARS. Onwards and upwards!

FOAMSTARS: A letter from the Producer

Kosuke Okatani, Producer of FOAMSTARS, shares an update on the game.
By Kosuke Okatani

Hello, Kosuke Okatani here, Producer of FOAMSTARS. Thank you for your continued support of the game!

I’m back with a progress report and a preview for Season 5!

Progress Report

1) Intentional Disconnects

In Patch v3.20 we implemented penalties for intentional disconnects, then adjusted these parameters in Patch v4.10. Our data shows that this has greatly reduced the number of disconnects.

As for players being idle for a long period of time during a battle (going AFK), we will continue to monitor game logs to see if this is intentional. If it is determined to be intentional, the user will be penalized and unable to join a match for a set amount of time.

We will continue working with the devs and the community to provide you with a better play experience.

2) Squad Mission Update Delay

Our initial Road Map listed a Squad Mission update during Season 4 and Season 5, but it has taken longer than expected to achieve our expected level of quality. We apologize for the delay and will announce the release date as soon as soon as we’re able to.

Season 5 Preview

1) Energy Stone Allocation Adjustments

We are adjusting the allocation of Energy Stones from Season 5 to help the new Foamstar get ready for the party!

Please look forward to the details in the Season 5 patch notes.

2) New Foamstar

Ramzey was previewed during the Happy FriYAY Party and will be a permanent member of the roster from the next season!

  • Foam Gun: Fleecy & Fluffy
  • Battle Style: Close-Range Fluffy Type

Ramzey has the unfortunate tendency to transform into Dark Ramzey while asleep, which nearly foamed up all of Bath Vegas. Since then, Ramzey has returned to their senses and dived into the wild wooly world of Foam Smash!

Shots

Ramzey’s rapid-fire shots bounces off obstacles, making them great for building up foam in a straight line.

However, don’t expect your shots to reach high places, or to connect with opponents out of your (relatively short) range!

Skills

The skill “Baaambs Away” helps mitigate Ramzey’s short range. Try having the grenade detonate at your feet to propel yourself to new strategic heights! The grenade is more damaging at close range, so try to get close to your opponent for an explosive assault.

Ramzey’s other skill, “Sheeplechase,” summons a parade of the bubble beastie, Lamby, which charge forward in a straight line. Lamby connects for huge damage while blocking enemy fire, serving as a long-lasting moving shield.

Both skills act differently depending which direction you’re holding the analog stick, so experiment!

Superstar Skill

The SSS “Ramzey’s Dream” transforms you into Dark Ramzey! You receive a massive boost to your defense and offense, so go wild!

However, be careful as this dark glow up makes you a bigger target. (Literally!)

As Dark Ramzey you also have access to the devastating “Meeehgaflare” skill. It has a bit of startup lag but the damage is well worth the wait. Use it in the middle of a scrum to foam up the enemy squad!

Ramzey will join the permanent roster next season and is playable now during the Happy FriYAY Party at the following times:

  • PDT: 8pm, June 18, 2024 – 2am, June 19, 2024
  • BST: 4am, June 19, 2024 – 10am, June 19, 2024
  • CEST: 5am, June 19 2024 - 11am June 19, 2024

  • PDT: 4am, June 19, 2024 – 10am, June 19, 2024

  • BST: 12pm, June 19, 2024 – 6pm, June 19, 2024
  • CEST: 1pm, June 19 2024 – 7pm June 19, 2024

  • PDT: 12pm, June 18, 2024 – 6pm, June 19, 2024

  • BST: 8pm, June 19, 2024 – 2am, June 19, 2024
  • CEST: 9pm, June 19 2024 - 3am June 19, 2024

3) New Skins

Coiff Guy is ready to welcome summer in style! Check out the design for his upcoming skin:

Finally, let me thank you again for the encouraging messages and fan art. Things like that really make all the difference!

Thanks,

Kosuke Okatani and the FOAMSTARS team

Square Enix locations we’d actually like to live in

From FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH to STAR OCEAN THE SECOND STORY R, we pick the towns in Square Enix games we’d move into if we could.
By Duncan Heaney

You’ve probably spent many hours saving the worlds of various Square Enix games, but have you ever thought about living in them?

Our rich and detailed locales are full of cities, towns and village, many of which are so beautiful and richly detailed that you almost want to move in yourself.

That got us thinking: if you could live anywhere in a Square Enix game, where would it be? With that in mind, here are seven of the settlements in Square Enix games that we think you could legitimately live in (if… y’know, they weren’t fictional).

Nemea Town - HARVESTELLA

Spring is the best season, and I won’t hear any arguments otherwise.

The plants are blooming, temperatures are on the rise without becoming sweltering, and there’s new life everywhere you look. It’s all rather inspiring. That’s why there’s no place I’d rather live in HARVESTELLA than Nemea Town.

This is a town of perpetual Spring. Beautiful cherry blossoms line its streets, framing its beautiful white buildings. It’s well protected thanks to the spear-wielding Asyl and the Argus Brigade. It’s full of loving people, who help run the very wholesome orphanage.

And the food. Oh man, the food! Nemea Bolognese, Zucchini and mince sandwiches, Peach Rose Mousse… I’m drooling just thinking about it all.

Time for some shameless pictures of food? I think so:

Rosehill - DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince

Rosehill is a modest settlement, but if you’ve played DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince, you know it’s much more than that.

This is a safe space that you’ll return to time and time throughout the adventure. It's the place where your monsters reside in a paddock, and also where you can synthesize new monsters at Rosehill Tower.

Add some truly charming human residents and you have something that’s far more than a town or village. It’s a home.

Haven - FINAL FANTASY XVI

FINAL FANTASY XVI’s world of Valisthea can be a harsh and brutal place.

Bearers, people born with the ability to use magic, are persecuted and enslaved, and the encroaching Blight drives nations into bloody wars. And even though Clive Rosfield and his allies work towards a better future, they know things will get worse before they get better.

That’s why Haven makes such an impression. Located in the Northern Territories, it’s home to unspoiled nature, a thriving ecosystem and clean water - the ideal place for a settlement. It’s also untouched by the conflicts that plague the rest of the realm thanks to a magical glamour that conceals it from view.

It contains a close-knit population who work together to support and protect their community - and where even Bearers are treated equally. In an often unkind world, it’s a real ray of light.

Bath Vegas - FOAMSTARS

Now this is what I call a party town! Well, technically, a party city.

Bath Vegas is the home of the fabled FOAMSMASH tournament - where the world’s best, brightest and… um, foamiest get together to compete in numerous high-octane competitions.

If I moved there, would I have a shot of becoming a FOAMSTAR? Probably not - sometimes I can’t even walk through a door without missing. Even so, Bath Vegas would be great - the scenery is stunning, the music scene is incredible (seriously - stream the soundtrack if you haven’t) and there’s always an awesome match to watch.

Living in Bath Vegas wouldn’t be a peaceful life, but boy it would be fun!

Cropdale - OCTOPATH TRAVELER II

Now if it’s a peaceful life you want, you won’t find better than Cropdale.

Nestled in the wooded Leaflands, this charming settlement is quiet, friendly and quite beautiful. Not only is it full of supportive people, such as Agnea’s family, it’s also relatively safe - while not without dangers, the local fauna is less malicious than some other parts of OCTOPATH TRAVELER II’s world of Solistia.

Not only that, but the eating’s good too - Cropdale has the best raspberries and peaches around! Fan of raspberry pie? This place has the best around. It even has a local festival, where the village gets together to eat, drink and enjoy each other’s company.

So, while there are more spectacular settlements in Solistia, such as the shining city of New Delsta, there are few locations as charmingly wholesome.

Lacuer City - STAR OCEAN THE SECOND STORY R

On the other end of the scale to Cropdale, we have STAR OCEAN THE SECOND STORY R’s vibrant Lacuer.

It’s the largest city on the planet Expel and full of awesome things to see. It has a top class hotel, a great tavern, a massive library and even a castle. Plus if you’re into your weapons - and considering the monster-filled world it’s in you probably should be - there are loads of different weapons shops to browse. Those in the know may also of some super-skilled artisans there too.

Best of all though, each year Lacuer hosts the Armory Contest - a hot ticket whether you’re competing or just sitting in the stands to watch.

With all that, and even more to see and do, I don’t think I’d ever get bored of living in Laceur.

Kalm - FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH

FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH has no shortage of towns so vibrant and well-realized that any of them could be on this list.

For fun in the sun, it’s hard to beat the sun-kissed beaches and party vibes of Costa del Sol. Does the Gold Saucer count as a town, because the good times never stop there? And if you asked for someone’s recommendation to get away from it all? Me? Gongaga.

But upon careful consideration, I think the best place to live would be Kalm - a town that, save for the occasional visit from Shinra, lives up to its name.

It’s got beautiful architecture, bustling shops, live music from visiting artists and - most importantly - a thriving Queen’s Blood scene. What more could you want?

Those were just a few of the most livable towns and cities in Square Enix games, but we’re sure you have thoughts of your own. Let us know on social media where you wish you could take up residence:

FOAMSTARS: A letter from the Producer

Kosuke Okatani, Producer of FOAMSTARS, shares an update on the game.
By Kosuke Okatani

Hello, Kosuke Okatani here, Producer of FOAMSTARS.

First, let me thank you for playing the game!

On behalf of the FOAMSTARS team, I’d like to apologize for the matchmaking errors many of you may have experienced during your gameplay. We are working to address this and other high-priority issues.

The next patch, v3.20, is scheduled to release on May 2, but we wanted to share some of the upcoming fixes in advance:

Patch v3.20 Changes / Fixes

1) Penalties for intentional disconnects / AFK

Players will be penalized for intentionally disconnecting during battles and via the Character Select screen, or for being idle for a long period of time during a battle (going AFK).

Penalized players will be unable to join a match for a set amount of time.

The Live Ops Team carefully reviews game logs before issuing a penalty. This process is designed to ensure each issue is judged fairly and that only intentional disconnects are escalated for penalties.

2) Radiant Rhythms Gardens: Spawn Camping

On this map, the opposing team can move close to your respawn area, so we have adjusted the respawn location to make sure players rejoin the battle at a random spot away from the enemy. We will continue to investigate this fix for other maps, if necessary.

3) Chloe Noir Bug Fixes

The next patch will address the following issues that occur under specific circumstances:

  • SSS gauge filling faster than intended.
  • Not being able to perform a normal shot after activating her SSS.
  • Not being able to fly as high as intended when activating her SSS.

We are also looking into other issues and fixes for Chloe Noir.

4) Squad Mission: Application Error

The next patch will fix a memory leak issue on PlayStation®4 that causes the application to crash.

We look forward to seeing these and more adjustments made as you continue to play FOAMSTARS! We thank you for your support.

As a token of appreciation, we wanted to also share a sneak peek at Season 4 which arrives in mid-May! First, here is a look at a new map coming in Season 4:

As well as one of the new hololive collaboration skins!

We’ve got even more coming to Season 4, so stay tuned!

And one more thing: The team loves receiving your encouraging messages, fan creations, and support! Let’s keep this party going and we look forward to sharing more soon.

Thanks,

Kosuke Okatani and the FOAMSTARS team

FOAMSTARS Season 3: Mysterious Swing - everything you need to know

By Duncan Heaney

The Groovy Disco may be drawing to a close, but the FOAMSTARS party’s not over yet! Season 3 - MYSTERIOUS SWING begins on Friday, April 12, 2024 and it’s bringing a whole load of new fun with it.

So, what can you expect from the upcoming season?

New character: Chloe Noir

First up, a new FOAMSTAR joins the contest - Chloe Noir.

This mysterious art gallery director seeks beauty in battle. She’s equipped with a charge rifle that shoots straight foam shots with impressive precision. In the right hands, she can be deadly in the arena. She can also hunt down her rivals with her bubble beastier Ciel, conjure wings to take to the skies and much more!

She’s an effective FOAMSTAR with a very unique feel - hopefully you’ll really enjoy using her! You can unlock Chloe through play by progressing the free Season Pass to Tier 31. Alternatively, purchasing the Premium Pass will unlock her for use immediately.

But while Chloe’s a real gem, she’s not the only one coming to the game…

Skill Gems

Skill Gems are a new addition that add even more customization to the game. You can use these gems to strengthen your FOAMSTARS’ standard and Superstar skills - the effects differ depending on the character.

You can make Skill Gems by using Energy Stones that you acquire while competing in matches. In addition, the new feature means that the existing three bubble slots will now be categorized as Star Gems.

Tips and tricks for playing FOAMSTARS

Want to get an edge over your rivals in FOAMSTARS? This handy advice should help you become the life of the party.
By Duncan Heaney

The FOAMSTARS party has begun!

The game is now out and available as a PlayStation Plus Monthly Game, meaning anybody with an active subscription can download and start playing!

If you’re about to jump into the fray and start building your rank across the multiple game modes, you may need a few tips and tricks to get you started. Don’t worry - we’re here to help.

Read on for some general advice on how to party with the best of them… and some handy pointers for each of the FOAMSTARS themselves!

General tips

Stay on the move!

FOAMSTARS is fast-paced and fiercely frantic. Your characters move quickly, especially when surfing on their team’s foam, so you should use this agility to your advantage.

Stay on the move to chase down opponents and objectives, and whatever you do, never stand still unless you have to. A static target is an easy target.

Be a team player!

The team that sprays together stays together. In team-based modes like Smash the Star and Rubber Duck Party, it pays to work with your comrades to achieve victory.

For example, working in groups or pairs is a good way to quickly foam up your rivals and set them up for an easy chill. Alternatively, having backup is useful to get you out of trouble when you get overwhelmed by the opposition.

There are lots of ways to help your teammates out - create foam paths for them to ride on, remove enemy foam to clear the way, build towers and structures for long-range attackers and so forth.

If you’re playing with friends, work together to find your own tactics, and if you’re joining strangers, try to stick close to another teammate as much as possible.

On that note…

Saving a teammate is as valuable as chilling a rival

There’s nothing more satisfying than taking down an opponent. That moment where you slide-kick into a foamed-up foe is a visceral thrill that never goes away. It’s so satisfying, in fact, that it’s all-too easy to get razor-focused on chilling your enemy above all else.

But remember - teamwork makes the dream work. If you see an ally foamed up, you can slide into them to release them from their predicament… and deprive your foe of their chill in the process.

Protecting your teammates can be just as important as taking out your opponents - especially in Smash the Star, where every chill takes you or your rivals closer to victory…

Experiment with different characters to find your perfect playstyle

There are multiple characters in FOAMSTARS, and they all have unique weapons, abilities, and playstyles. For example, Rave Breaker’s wide firing weapon offers a very different set of tactical options to the Baristador’s long-range hose.

We’ve put some tips and tricks for each character below, but the best way to learn their ins and outs is to use them. Experiment with all the different characters, use their abilities and discover their strengths and weaknesses.

You’ll soon discover the ones that feel best for you, whether you choose to mainline one or mix and match to suit different situations.

Use your abilities - don’t hoard them!

Every character has three Skills - two that are fired off with the shoulder buttons, and a Superstar Skill that requires charging before use.

As your standard Skills require a cool-down, it can be tempting to hoard them for the ‘perfect’ time to unleash them. But take our advice: don’t hold back, especially when you’re just starting out.

Skills recharge relatively quickly, and they can be real game changers when used. Depending on the character, they can help you lay down foam quickly, remove rivals’ surfaces, chill foes, force them out of position and more.

In other words, they’re there to be used. So, use them!

Use your foam to speed up or slow the rubber duck

In Rubber Duck Party, your goal is to take possession of the titular Rubber Duck and lead it to the goal. There’s a neat trick you can do to give yourself an edge in this endeavor.

Spray foam in front of the duck and - if your team is in possession - it will move faster! If you see that your team is amassed on the marvelous mallard, you can lay down a path to make your journey to the goal that little bit smoother.

But what if your opponents have control of the Duck? Spraying your foam in front of it can actually hinder its progress, slowing it down, just as you slow down when trudging on your rivals’ bubbles.

Defend dancers

In Rubber Duck Party, you can give your buoyant buddy a burst of speed by dancing on its head. It takes a while to ramp up to those killer moves though, and the dancer is completely vulnerable while they strut their stuff.

In other words, they’re easy prey for the opposition, so if you see someone winding up on the Duck, be ready to turn bodyguard and do whatever you can to keep them safe. That speed burst is incredibly useful, so help your team dance their way to success!

Learn level layouts

The stages in FOAMSTARS are filled with boosters, paths and more that can zip you around the map quickly. Take some time to learn the layout of the stage you’re on, and you can shave valuable seconds off your travel time and get back into the fray faster.

It’s particularly important to know your way round in Happy Bath Survival. If you’re playing support on the upper levels, it’s vital to get around quickly so you can keep pace with your targets and support your teammates below. And if you’re one of the embattled players in the midst of the action, an understanding of routes could give you an edge over your rival.

Character tips

Next up, we’ll offer up a few tips of each of the characters available at launch:

Soa

  • Soa's shots cover a wide area if you fire them in the air. You can use this to cause confusion and deal the final blow to fleeing rivals.

  • You can use the left stick to affect how Soa sprays foam with Bubble Step. If you can predict which way your target will move, you could land a skillful hit.

  • Soa’s Gotta Crush Superstar Skill moves faster when you roll downhill. The faster you move, the further she can jump at the end of it.

ΔGITO

  • If you can get close to your opponent, you can hit multiple bubble shots into your rival at once. It also puts you in a perfect position to slide in for the chill.

  • ΔGITO's Deep Blue Gank Skill is a great way to get up close to an opponent without them spotting you. Even better, when you leap out, your Bubble Beastie KIRIMΔRU leaps out too - potentially hitting your opponent and giving you an opening to strike!

  • When using ΔGITO's THX GG Superstar Skill, KIRIMΔRU will hunt down whatever rival is dead ahead when it appears.

Tonix

  • When the foam bubbles from Tonix’s Ms. Fuzzy Turret III Skill land from a height, they bounce and keep on rolling. Try placing it on a high platform or even a tower of foam for maximum range!

  • Charging Tonix’s shots can create exploding foam shots that create tall heaps of foam. It’s a great way to foam up an area fast, or block foes.

  • The Ms. Fizzy Turret III and Mr. Bouncy Bubble Skills can be wiped out if they take too many hits, so be careful where you place them

Penny Gywn

  • Penny Gwyn’s Toboggan Bomb Skill is great to create paths of foam for your team to traverse. Use it for tactical approaches or escaping the opposition.

  • Penny Gwyn’s foam gun can fire shots over quite a distance. It makes for a flexible weapon, especially at mid-range.

  • The Penguin Squad Skill is great at hitting your opposition with a barrage of foam, but it’s also a great way to build up mountain of foam very quickly. It’s a defensive tool as well as an offensive one

Jet Justice

  • If you want to land Jet Justice’s Cosmic Dive Skill early, you can press the button again mid-jump. It’s great if you need to come down to earth in a hurry.

  • Charging Jet Justice’s shots let him fire off giant bursts of foam that roll forward along the ground. These do more damage than standard shots and can force your rivals onto the move.

  • Jet Justice's Galactic Bubble Shield Superstar Skill is enormously useful, but it’s not invincible. For example, explosions will go right through it, so watch out!

The Baristador

  • This coffee-lovers weapon has a very long range, so you can use it to back up your allies from a distance. Be warned though - up close it’s far less effective.

  • Holding the button down while using Bitter Drip will build a wall of foam wherever you aim.

  • The Super City Roast Skill can instantly create long paths and cut through opponent’s bubbles. It’s great for making a route for you and the team - or clearing a big pile of rival foam.

Mel T

  • Once you lock onto a foe, aiming sideways or upwards before you fire mean that your shot will travel in a wide arc before homing in. This can let you avoid obstacles in the way, such as rival foam stacks.

  • Mel T’s Superstar Skill, Force Beam Tasting, is extremely powerful, but it also leaves her vulnerable. Be aware of your surroundings when you use it, as it could give your rivals the opening they need to take you down.

  • The Sumptuous Promo Skill offers different ways to pile up foam. You can hold the button to create a continuous straight line or create scattered heaps of foam.

FOAMSTARS Roadmap unveiled

What’s coming up in FOAMSTARS’ first season? See the roadmap and learn about the limited-time events here!
By Duncan Heaney

FOAMSTARS is just a few days away!

The foam and fun-filled online multiplayer party begins on February 6, 2024, as a PlayStation® Plus Monthly game. That means anybody with an active PlayStation®Plus subscription can download and play the game at no additional cost!

FOAMSTARS launches with multiple modes, covering competitive, co-operative, and solo play - read about them here:

But that’s only half the story, because FOAMSTARS has Seasons of fun ahead. These Seasons will offer limited-time events, while updates will add additional characters, maps, modes, and cosmetic items throughout the year.

The new trailer and roadmap lay out some of the things you can expect:

Things kick off with Season One: Starry Pop!

Season One: Starry Pop

The first Season runs between Tuesday February 6, 2024, and Friday March 8, 2024. During that time, you’ll be able to take part in seasonal events where you’ll compete for rankings and enjoy different game modes!

These include:

Ranked Party

In these events, you can spend Rank Points (RP) to participate in a 5-round match. RP will be awarded based on the result of the match after the fifth round.

There are seven ranks in the game: Bronze Star, Gold Star, Platinum Star, Diamond Star, Super Star and Party Legend. After you earn a certain amount of RP, you can take on a Rank-Up Trial for your chance to ascend.

The two limited-time events include:

  • RANKED PARTY LONESTAR - a mode for solo players.

  • RANKED PARTY TRIBE-VIBE - take on the challenge with a team of up to 4 players.

Extreme Party

In these limited-time events, players can take place in two special-themed modes:

  • All Mel T Party - a limited-time mode where all players battle it out as the dangerously precocious CEO Mel T.

  • Invisible Party - a fun and frenetic mode where all players are invisible. The first team to score 10 takedowns - or ‘chills’ in the game’s terminology - will be declared the winner. Can you hit what you can’t see?

Happy FriYAY Party

This weekend-only party event isn’t about winning or losing. There will be a few chances to try out Season Two’s new FOAMSTAR: Coiff Guy. Spoilers: he’s awesome. It’s a good way to get some hands-on experience before he becomes available to unlock.

Season Passes explained

Each Season runs for approximately five weeks, and brings a selection of new content, including new themed gameplay, events, maps, characters, and cosmetics.

Each Season is also accompanied by a free Season Pass, which allows you to progress through the ranks and unlock rewards by earning experience points (XP) through gameplay, such as battles, missions, and challenges.

There’s also a purchasable Premium Season Pass, which will allow certain rewards to be immediately unlocked, such as Mel T in Season One and additional season-specific cosmetics to earn.

Regardless of which Season Pass you use, you’ll still be able to get access to the new maps, modes, and characters - you’re always part of the FOAMSTARS party!

We can’t wait for you join the fun from February 6, 2024! Remember, the game is available as a PlayStation Monthly Game, so if you have a PS5 or a PS4 and subscribe to PlayStation Plus, you can download and play at no additional cost!

FOAMSTARS will launch February 6, 2024, as part of the PlayStation Plus Monthly Games line-up!

The foam party is about to begin. Here’s everything you need to know about this vibrant new online shooter.
By Duncan Heaney

Ever since we announced FOAMSTARS last year, many of you have been curious to find out when and how you can join the party yourselves. We’re delighted to both say it and spray it: FOAMSTARS launches February 6, 2024! Yes, it’s just a few weeks away!

What’s more, the full game will be available as part of the PlayStation Plus Monthly Games line-up for February. That means that between February 6 and March 4, all PlayStation Plus members will be able to redeem, download and play FOAMSTARS at no extra cost.

And like all titles in the Monthly Games line-up, once you’ve redeemed the game, you can play as much as you like, so long as you have an active PS Plus subscription!

So, what can you expect from this fun and foam-filled extravaganza?

What is FOAMSTARS?

Just in case any of you are just joining the party now, allow us to introduce the game. FOAMSTARS is a brand new 4v4 online party shooter for PS5 and PS4. You choose one of a large roster of colorful characters and can take them into the action across multiple game modes and arenas.

But unlike other multiplayer shooters, you aren’t spraying bullets - you’re spraying foam! You can use your bubbly ballistics to build new terrain, surf round at superfast speeds, create vantage points and much more! And of course, you can foam up your rivals to claim victory too!

So, what is FOAMSTARS? It’s colorful, it’s joyful and it’s a wonderfully fun multiplayer game. If you’re a PS Plus Subscriber, you should grab it at no extra cost to yourself in February, give it a go and experience it for yourselves!

What modes are available to play?

At launch, FOAMSTARS will offer multiple modes, including multiplayer options as well as some single player content too. Here’s what you can expect:

Smash the Star (4v4)

You’ll recognize this mode if you played the Open Beta Party last year. It’s a 4v4 contest, where the goal is to foam up your opponents and take them out.

Once seven players from a team have been defeated, the highest performing player on that team will be designated the ‘Star Player’ and awarded some handy buffs. The goal of the opposing team then becomes to take out that Star Player and win the game.

So, try to take down enough of your opposition to create their Star Player and foam them up to claim victory. Of course, they’ll be trying to do the same to you, so protect your team at all costs…

Happy Bath Survival (4v4)

This mode splits the team with half inside the arena and half outside it for each round. Players on the outside of the arena can assist their teammates by laying down defensive foam and other techniques, while the inside players fight up close to take the victory!

Teamwork really does make the dream work in this mode!

Rubber Duck Party (4v4)

It’s a case of duck and cover in this frantically exciting mode. The goal is to climb aboard the rubber duck to make it advance towards your opponent’s goal. If it crosses the line, victory is yours! You can even dance on its head to make it sprint towards success.

Of course, your rivals will be doing everything in their power to take control of the duck away from you… and you’ll be doing the same to them. It’ll take teamwork and skill to triumph amongst the mallard mayhem.

FOAMSTAR Mission (Solo)

New to bustling Bath Vegas? Want to get to know the characters and experiment with their abilities? This single player mode lets you do just that.

Each FOAMSTAR has their own story, so you’ll get to know this cast of quirky characters and put them through their paces before you head into the heart of the multiplayer action!

Squad Mission (4-player co-op)

Up to three friends can team up to take on team missions together. Clear waves of foes to earn upgrades with different effects for your FOAMSTARS.

Are you good enough to complete the missions?

Challenges

As well as through matches, you can also unlock rewards in FOAMSTARS by completing Challenges!

There are three types: Anytime, Limited-Time and Weekly, each with their own rewards to claim. Some you’ll naturally complete through play, while others you’ll have to work a little harder to overcome.

Some rewards will only be unlocked through challenges, such as the mysterious character The Baristador, so be sure to give them a go!

Updates

The launch is just the start for FOAMSTARS. Over the first year, there will be free seasonal updates, which will include new characters, maps, modes and more.

As you play, you’ll earn XP from matches or missions and raise your tier. As your tier increases, additional rewards will unlock!

You’ll also be able to purchase a Premium Season Pass, which includes exclusive rewards and unlocks some earlier. For example, in the first season, the character Mel T will be unlocked immediately with the Premium Pass.

There are a lot of surprises in store over the first year of FOAMSTARS - the party doesn’t stop!

Meet the FOAMSTARS

Take part in the Open Beta Party, and you’ll be able to choose to play as eight very different eight bright and vibrant FOAMSTARS, each one with their own distinct skillset, playstyle and personality.

Who you choose to play as is entirely up to you - for example, do you favor the acrobatic agility of Soa or the long-range expertise of The Baristador? Do you like to get up close and personal with Jet Justice or go for full-on foam with the missile-launching Mel T?

Whoever you pick, just remember this: there is no ‘correct’ choice. Each character is viable, so it’s up to you to discover their strengths - and use them to help your team to success.

So, as the Beta preparation gets underway, we thought we’d showcase these fantastic FOAMSTARS and tell you a little about what they can do. Each has unique attributes that are specific to them:

  • A foam gun type
  • A bubble beastie partner
  • Two skills - these can be unleashed at any time, but require cooldowns to reuse.
  • A Super Star Skill - a super-powerful ability that must be charged up to use.

So without further ado, let’s introduce the cast:

Soa

Soa is a stylish idol who has mastered the art of acrobatically controlling bubbles.

She was born with the innate ability to control bubbles, and although she initially resented this power, she’s come to accept it as part of who she is. She decided to compete in FOAMSMASH, believing that it is the best place to show her uniqueness.

  • Foam Gun: Twinkle Groove (Dual Pistol Type) - Rapidly fire numerous bubbles continuously from dual wielded pistols.

  • Bubble Beastie: Spiky

  • Skill-A: Fires a barrage of shots with a nimble flip.

  • Skill-B: Hurls Spiky a long way off. It sticks to the ground or wall where it lands and causes a huge explosion.

  • Super Star Skill: Soa rolls around inside a massive Spiky, blasting away any rivals she bumps into.

ΔGITO

ΔGITO is a pro-gamer who continues to dominate the world of e-sports. He’s already reached the pinnacle of many different games and was victorious in multiple world-famous competitions.

Hyped up with relentless victory, Agito chose FOAMSMASH as the next game to conquer.

  • Foam Gun: MURΔMΔSΔ (Shotgun Type) - Shoots high-power buckshot bubbles. It is especially powerful at close range.

  • Bubble Beastie: KIRIMΔRU

  • Skill-A: Makes ΔGITO sink under the foam with KIRIMΔRU and move around at high speed while the button is pressed. He leaps out when the button is released.

  • Skill-B: Hurls a bubbly exploding shuriken, which can blast away ΔGITO himself as well as rivals.

  • Super Star Skill: Makes KIRIMΔRU grow huge and race off like a torpedo, chasing down nearby rivals.

Tonix

Tonix is a genius inventor. She is bursting with curiosity and is eager to test her inventions on the battlefield.

While there are successful inventions she creates, sometimes she also gives birth to weird inventions. She has affection towards all of her inventions and treat them as if they are her children.

  • Foam Gun:* Her Majesty Queen Soda (Charge Burst Rifle Type) - Burst-fires 5 bubbles at once. Charge and shoot a foam grenade by holding the trigger.

  • Bubble Beastie: Squash

  • Skill-A: Sets up a turret gun that locks on and continuously targets any rivals that come in range.

  • Skill-B: Unleashes an exploding foam bomb that chases down nearby rivals.

  • Super Star Skill: Summons a massive foam blaster robot. The robot targets the closest rival with three shots from the mega-foam cannon.

Jet Justice

Jet Justice is a self-proclaimed hero and peacekeeper. Even today, he prowls the streets to keep them safe.

He was born and raised in Bath Vegas and loves it with all his heart. Every day, he fights for peace of his hometown with handcrafted suits and his made-up identity as a civilian hero.

  • Foam Gun: Jet Blaster (Shotgun Type) - Shoots buckshot bubbles. Charge and shoot a giant bubble by holding the trigger.

  • Bubble Beastie: Graviton

  • Skill-A: Uses jet propulsion to lunge forward before making a powerful landing.

  • Skill-B: Shoots Graviton out in a straight line, who draws surrounding rivals in towards a single point.

  • Super Star Skill: Creates a shield that repels rival foam shots.

Mel T

Mel T is the owner and face of an ice cream brand. She might appear innocent and cute but this CEO packs a punch.

As soon as she entered FOAMSMASH for promoting her ice cream brand Meltie’s, she became an idol of the competition. She never forgets to promote her brand even in the midst of battle.

  • Foam Gun: Heartful Delivery (Homing Launcher Type) - Shoots ice cream-shaped foam missiles. The foam missiles will home in on enemies being aimed at.

  • Bubble Beastie: Candy

  • Skill-A: Summon Candy and have it fire loads of soap suds.

  • Skill-B: Fires ice cream missiles that target a particular point with a bubble bombardment.

  • Super Star Skill: Fires a cream laser that can be moved with the camera controls while it's energized.

The Baristador

A gentleman full of mystery. Some might find it hard to believe he is the unassuming owner of café bar. He’s utterly devoted to brewing exceptional-tasting coffee.

His knowledge of Bath Vegas is second to none - perhaps he’s been living there for longer than people realize…

  • Foam Gun: Coffee Breaker (Long Hose Type) - Sprays a stream of foam over a long distance. It is easy to use at mid-range too.

  • Bubble Beastie: Toraja

  • Skill-A: Shoots out Toraja, who quickly creates a foam path ahead, and then sprays foam around for a while.

  • Skill-B: Unleashes a syphon-style missile that creates a wall of froth where it strikes.

  • Super Star Skill: Sends Toraja up high to unleash a foaming milk laser on a particular location.

Rave Breaker

Rave Breaker is a clean freak who wants to sanitize the competition.

As far as he’s concerned, parties are filthy and partygoers are fools. He’s so convinced of this, that he enters the FOAMSMASH to use his own foam to ‘disinfect the virus’ - in other words, take out the other players who are just trying to have a good time.

  • Foam Gun: World Sanitizer (Wide Hose Type) - Sprays a stream of foam across a wide area. It is easy to use at close to mid-range.

  • Bubble Beastie: Roly-Moley

  • Skill-A: Rave Breaker dives down and moves around under the foam while the button is pressed. When it's released, he leaps out and trashes the bubbles.

  • Skill-B: Hurls Roly-Moley, who gets hidden in the foam where it lands. When a rival approaches, it explodes and wipe out foam.

  • Super Star Skill: Unleashes a super-powerful Roly-Moley that sucks up surrounding rivals and foam.

Pen Gwyn

Pen Gwyn is a penguin soldier and is ready to chill anyone who stands in the way of her fight against global warming.

She was adopted and raised by penguins in Antarctica. Her dream is to use the winnings from FOAMSMASH to stop the shrinkage of Antarctica.

  • Foam Gun: PNG-90S (Assault Rifle Type) - A highly accurate weapon that shoots numerous bubbles continuously. It is easy to use at mid-range.

  • Bubble Beasties: Slider, Waddler, Emp

  • Skill-A: Summons Waddler to fire a concentrated barrage of foam shots to the fore.

  • Skill-B: Sends Slider off ahead, sliding over the ground and creating a path of foam.

  • Super Star Skill: Sends Emp forging ahead, blasting away foam and rivals along the way to blow up with a massive explosion in the end.

We hope you’re excited to get your hands on these foam-flinging heroes. To help you get started, here are some very quick tips to give you the edge over your opponents:

  • Foaming up your rivals isn't enough - you have to surf into them to knock them out!

  • If you see a teammate has been foamed up, you can surf into them to release them. Nothing's more satisfying than depriving your opponent a takedown!

  • Enemy foam will slow you down, so try to stay away! Alternatively, replace it with your own foam - the more you're on your own bubbles, the better!

  • You can use foam to build up walls, create towers to get the high ground and more. Work with your team to find creative ways to outwit your opponents!

  • Remember that skills are there to be used! They recharge over time, and can also give them a boost by spreading foam around the arena or covering your rivals. Don't be afraid to unleash them - they can be real game-changers! You

  • Finally, experiment and have fun. There's a lot of depth in FOAMSTARS, so play with the different characters, try out their skills and before long, you'll find a playstyle that suits you. And have a great time doing so!

We hope you enjoy the Open Beta Party and we’ll have much more to share about the game in the future. Be sure to follow the team on social media to stay up to date with news and updates!
