PowerWash Simulator: a closer look at the Shrek Special Pack

What are you cleaning in the Shrek Special Pack? Get a closer look at the five new jobs here.
By Duncan Heaney

The wait is ogre - the Shrek Special Pack is now available for PowerWash Simulator!

This new DLC adds five new jobs based on DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek universe. These new fairy tale maps have been covered by layers of dirt (like an onion!) and it’ll take more than a little magic to return them to their former glory.

Fortunately, you’re here to sort things out. Equipped with a selection of high-pressure power washers, you’ll clean through iconic locations inspired by the movies, and even interact with some of their most famous characters.

What are the new jobs?

So what exactly will you be cleaning in the Shrek Special Pack? Let’s take a look at the jobs, and how the team at FuturLab brought them to life:

Shrek’s Swamp

First up, you’ll get to restore Shrek’s Swamp to its former, ahem, understated glory after it’s been covered in glittery goop. But you don’t just get to clean the outside of his home - you’ll also get to venture inside and find even more to clean.

You’ll discover an impressive attention to detail. Lead Game Designer Nick McCarthy (FuturLab) explains: “Much time was spent closely examining all the films to understand every root, spoon, jar, and of course – pufferfish!”

Duloc

When you arrive in Duloc, you’ll find a collection of art left behind by some disgruntled (but artistically gifted) knights. This impressively eye-catching graffiti was expertly created by Junior Artist Sean Ferretti - it’s work that’s well worth calling out!

But that is the least of this perfect place’s troubles. You’ll also encounter the iconic Duloc information diorama, which has 60 individual pieces to clean. Yes, that’s 60 individual dings - satisfying doesn’t come close to describing it.

But in classic PowerWash Simulator fashion, the grime isn’t there for no reason, as Nick McCarthy explains:

"Duloc is such an open, clean area that we were intent on covering it in as much dirt as possible. We also wanted to give players a clear indication of why and who had maliciously mucked it up. Credit to our writer Mark Ginbey for finding the story angle."

Fairy Godmother’s Potion Factory

The famous escape scene through the Fairy Godmother’s Potion Factory is a real highlight of Shrek 2 - and the factory has been recreated in glorious detail in the Shrek Special Pack. It even has working machines, beautifully brought to life by animator Alannah Meek!

The fairy tale world really comes to life in this job, with beautiful special effects across the level. Everywhere you look, potions twinkle and sparkle and note the mysteriously illuminated door.

It’s a feast for the eyes - or at least it will be when it’s clean!

Dragon’s Lair

Glittering gold and sparkling gems await in Dragon’s Lair. Of course, you’ll have to uncover the hoard beneath the layers of dirt to take in all the beautiful loot yourself.

There are loads of details in this map for eagle-eyed fans. As well as actual gems, you’ll find hidden gems from the Shrek universe, so keep your eyes peeled for these delightful references.

One more detail to notice from the team: you’ll uncover an enormous cooking pot fit for a king! However, when you dust off Dragon’s recipe book, you’ll discover it’s not for a king, but for a knight…

Hansel’s Honeymoon Hideaway

We end with a sweet treat for you to enjoy: Hansel’s Honeymoon Hideaway. Beneath the grime is the most delicious candy cottage you’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, you can only clean it - munching on it isn’t in the scope of the job. Sorry about that.

McCarthy explains: “Design duo Federico D’Apote (Designer) and Mark Ginbey (Writer) brewed a great story for this level, imagining all the general wear and tear that might happen if a home was made from candy!”

The Shrek Special Pack is available to purchase now as paid DLC for PowerWash Simulator on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam and Windows.

If you’re yet to experience the cathartic power of cleaning for yourselves, PowerWash Simulator is also available now on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam and Windows.
