Read on and we’ll tell you everything you need to know:

What is BRAVELY DEFAULT II?

In this expansive RPG, you take control of four unlikely heroes, Seth, Gloria, Elvis, and Adelle, as they set out across the land of Excillant in search of four elemental crystals.

If that basic setup sounds familiar (in concept at least), it should - the game is an unashamed love letter to classic Japanese RPGs - think turn-based combat, a party of memorable heroes, towns full of quirky characters, dangerous dungeons full of secrets, imaginative enemy designs, an absolutely incredible soundtrack… everything you’d hope to see and more.

But the game is no simple nostalgia project - BRAVELY DEFAULT II expands and modernises the classic RPG-style with a variety of innovations that give it a unique identity quite unlike any other title around.

First and foremost among them, is the battle system, from which the game takes its name.

Oh yeah - what is with the name?

It relates to the Brave and Default systems, which form the core of the combat.

In combat, you have access to attacks, magic, items and so on - but you have two additional options: Brave or Default.

‘Default’ lets you essentially ‘save’ a turn so you can spend it later. ‘Brave’ lets you spend all your saved turns, allowing you to perform multiple actions all in the same turn.

It’s one of those systems that’s incredibly easy to get to grips with yet imbued with staggering tactical depth. Storing actions and unleashing them at the perfect time is indescribably satisfying - you feel like a genuine genius when your carefully laid strategy explodes into success.

Your tactical options expand even more when you factor it the expansive job system in the game. Your party can switch between different roles, from RPG mainstays like Black Mage and Dragoon, to more unique jobs like Bastion and Gambler - all with their own skills and spells.

Do you need to have played the original BRAVELY DEFAULT to play BRAVELY DEFAULT II?

Nope - the game is a completely standalone adventure with new characters, new story, a new setting and more. The ‘sequel’ nature of the game is more to do with thematic and gameplay similarities than narrative ones.

It’s similar to the mainline FINAL FANTASY or DRAGON QUEST series in that respect. Each entry is specifically designed to be played by new players and old players alike, and you don’t need any prior knowledge of previous entries to understand or enjoy it.

Though if you have played the original games, there may few subtle references in there to make you smile and stroke your chin knowingly…
