6 reasons FINAL FANTASY XIV: Heavensward should not be missedDragons! Snow! It’s free!
Who doesn’t love free stuff?
In case you missed it, FINAL FANTASY XIV: Heavensward is currently available at no additional cost to any players who own FINAL FANTASY XIV: Online Starter Edition, or FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn.
Considering the price (or lack thereof), the expansion is a must-get for old and new players alike. But you may be wondering: why? What makes Heavensward so good?
Here are just six reasons:
1. It has dragons and snow… wait, why does that sound familiar?
For some reason, lots of people have spent the last few weeks arguing about dragons and snow. Can’t possibly imagine why.
Whatever it was, it seems thematically appropriate because Heavensward is all about dragons. And also snow. There are big walls too. Not sure why I felt the need to mention that.
The main crux of the expansion’s story concerns the Dragonsong War. This conflict between Ishgard and the scaly Dravanian Horde has simmered for thousands of years, without a satisfactory resolution for either side.
The Warrior of Light (that’s you by the way) gets drawn into the conflict, and starts to work towards peace - even if that involves taking on an old, powerful (and very angry) dragon.
So you have snow, dragons and conflict with a strange and ancient enemy. How much more 2019 could it be?
Oh, and just putting this out there for no particular reason… Heavensward’s story actually has a satisfying ending.
2. It adds a whole new race - the Au Ra
One of the joys of the first FINAL FANTASY XIV Online expansion is that it adds new races. Not only do these add tons of new customization options for players, they also richness and diversity to the world of Hydaelyn.
The Au Ra, making their debut in Heavensward, are no exception. Players can choose between two clans: the conflict-focused Xaela and the more settled and spiritual Raen. Each has a distinct look and culture that’s well worth digging into for lore fiends.
3. It adds new jobs too
Heavensward opens up your gameplay options in a big way. The expansion adds three new jobs: Dark Knight, Astrologian and Machinist.
If you’ve seen the excellent trailer for the upcoming third expansion, Shadowbringers, you’ll have seen the Dark Knight in action. If you haven’t… well, here you go:
Dark Knights act as tanks, using greatswords to inflict high levels of damage on their foes. They have the ability to draw on the powers of darkness to enhance their weapons, using their skills to dish out damage and drain HP from enemies.
Astrologians specialize in magic and healing. They use their knowledge of the constellations to draw cards and help allies in battle.
Machinists can build lots of fancy mechanical gizmos to help them in battle, including turrets, cannons and more.
- FINAL FANTASY XIV: Heavensward is free for a limited time
- FINAL FANTASY XIV: Shadowbringers free character creator available for download
- 5 fantastic FINAL FANTASY weapons
To access any of these jobs, players must have completed the main scenario quest of A Realm Reborn, and achieved level 50 with at least one job. If you’re still working through the initial storyline, don’t despair - you can use a Tales of Adventure item to boost yourself to the required level - more on that in a bit.
4. Haurchefant is just the coolest dude
Haurchefant Greystone is the true definition of a fan-favorite character.
Although he first appeared in A Realm Reborn, it’s in Heavensward where he truly comes into his own.
Despite being the illegitimate son of Count Edmont de Fortemps, Haurchefant has the respect and advantages that come with being part of a noble family. He separates himself from his noble peers in Ishgard in one way though - he’s friendly, and welcoming to player characters.
He’s helpful too, even joining the party at one point in the story. He’s a regular presence throughout the main Heavensward storyline, and offers both practical support and words of encouragement to the heroes.
Long story short, Haurchefant is the man, and being in his company is time well-spent.
5. You can fly! High up in the sky!
One of the most popular new features in Heavensward is the ability to fly.
Okay, so you need a flying mount, a certain level of progress in the main scenario and an understanding of Aether Currents, but when you have all that, the sky’s the limit.
After hours of being stuck on the ground, launching into the air feels liberating. It’s fast and fun… not to mention a good way to escape from a fight if you get in over your head.
6. It’s still currently free!
Worth reiterating - Heavensward is currently available at no cost to anyone who owns the FINAL FANTAY XIV: Online Starter Edition or FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn on PS4 or PC/Mac.
The promotion’s also the perfect opportunity for anyone who’s even remotely curious about the game to give it a go. If you like what you play (and you will because FINAL FANTASY XIV Online is great), you get hours of additional quests, story and more - all absolutely free.
But maybe you’re wondering: what if I want to skip straight to Heavensward? After all, snow and dragons right?
That’s where the Tales of Adventure items come in.
Tales of Adventure - now on sale
These items exist to help players get straight to the content that they want to play.
For example, if you want to play Heavensward immediately, without going through the entire storyline of A Realm Reborn, you can purchase a Tales of Adventure item to boost your character up to the required level, or push through story progression.
There’s currently a sale on these items, and they’re going for as much as 60% off. That means right now, you can pick up the Tales of Adventure item that skips A Realm Reborn and immediately access Heavensward content for only $6.99.
